The Falcon and The Winter Soldier actor Daniel Brühl is curious to find out how Kevin Feige reacts to his upcoming TV show, which is a commentary about superhero franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One of the characters to become a fan-favorite in the MCU is Baron Zemo, who made his debut in Captain America: Civil War before having a supporting role in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Following his adventures in the Disney+ show, Zemo hasn't been seen in the MCU for quite some time.
Screen Rant recently spoke to Brühl about his new movie Race for Glory: Audi vs. Lancia, which focuses on the 1983 World Rally Championship. During the interview, the MCU star was able to share some thoughts on his time in the Avengers-based franchise, as he is currently working on the HBO drama The Franchise, which is set to be a satire on superhero cinematic universes. While Brühl is definitely wondering if Zemo's story will continue after The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, he is also eager to see how someone like Feige reacts to The Franchise, stating the following:
I mean, they haven't killed me yet...
now I'm doing a series, which is called The Franchise. But if there are people who have a lot of sense of humor, then it's Marvel and it's Kevin Feige. I'm very happy to shoot something about the franchise world and with a comical approach.
But I guess it was nice with that Zemo guy because he was so surprising and different. Also, the second time around I was invited to explore the sense of humor in that character, which I relish and enjoy so much. So again, it was a surprise, I was invited to surprise the people. So I guess that if he shows up again, you really need to carefully think what is this crazy little guy up to this time around? So if the right opportunity would come, I wouldn't say no, obviously. But for now, I'm into other things that I'm very happy with because that might have collided. I think they're shooting [Thunderbolts] right now, so the destiny and fate always. I strongly believe in that. You just follow the path that you are offered to follow.
Related How To Watch the Marvel Movies In Order (By Release Date & In Order Of MCU Timeline Events) Want to catch up before the next release, or just revisit the universe for a refresher? Here's the order to watch the entire MCU timeline. Will Daniel Brühl Return As Baron Zemo In The MCU? Close The last that viewers saw of Zemo's story in the MCU was him getting locked away in The Raft, leaving the door wide open for Marvel Studios to use him in future stories. With Marvel Studios, if they leave a character's fate open like they did in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, it likely means they could be slowly building towards a longer endgame for them. The only downside is that it could be as long as multiple projects from now, which could mean a phase or two down the line.
Many are presuming that Zemo's next appearance - or at least a secret role - will be in the upcoming Thunderbolts movie, which is coming out later in Phase 5. With Zemo's ties to the team in Marvel Comics, Thunderbolts would be a natural project in which he could appear. That said, for the time being, there aren't any plans for him to take part in the ensemble film. Another potential project that would make sense for him to have at least some role in is Captain America: Brave New World, as The Raft could easily be factored into Thunderbolt Ross' arc.
Richard E. Grant, who played a Loki variant on Loki, is also starring in The Franchise.
Hopefully, the MCU will have Zemo back sooner rather than later, if not until after the Multiverse Saga. With the greater lore that exists around Zemo from the comics, the MCU has only scratched the surface of him. If there is another Thunderbolts movie, perhaps he could play a bigger role in a hypothetical sequel within the MCU.
Catch Brühl as Roland Gumpert in Race for Glory: Audi vs. Lancia, releasing in theaters and VOD on January 5, 2024.
