Loki Season 2 Makes A Phase 5 Villain Redemption Story Way More Possible

Summary
  • Loki's redemption arc in the MCU has shown that villains can win over audiences just as much as heroes, paving the way for other villains to be redeemed.
  • Agatha Harkness, introduced in WandaVision, may have a similar arc of redemption and could become the MCU's newest lovable antihero, much like Loki.
  • Agatha: Darkhold Diaries has the potential to explore Agatha's backstory and past actions, allowing the audience to understand her and sympathize with her, similar to how Loki's character was developed.
Loki season 2 is the culmination of Loki's seminal redemption arc in the MCU, and it helped to make the redemption of one Phase 5 villain even more possible. Ever since Loki made his MCU debut in Thor, his character has proved that the franchise's villains can win over the hearts and minds of audiences just as much as its heroes. Even as he proceeded to attempt to subjugate Earth, thereby causing the deaths of innocents, it didn't take long for Loki to find himself in the good graces of MCU audiences once more.
Loki isn't the only MCU villain to go through a redemption arc. Emil Blonsky made a shocking pivot towards inner serenity in She-Hulk while M'Baku turned from a treasonous antagonist to a fan-favorite supporting hero in the space of one movie. There is one villain, much like these, that also deserves a shot at redemption after winning over audiences in just a few appearances - and it is likely to happen.

Loki Season 2 Proves Agatha Can Be Redeemed In Agatha: Darkhold Diaries Close Loki's ascent to become the MCU's God of Stories and caretaker of the Multiverse sets a new standard in the MCU. Despite being responsible for the deaths of innocents, he was able to find absolution in addition to the ultimate power that his past self would have been particularly eager to receive. Agatha has experienced a similar arc since being introduced in WandaVision, as she was responsible for the death of her witch's coven - including her own mother. Additionally, her pursuit of power, culminating in her attempts to steal it from Wanda, is familiar ground for Loki, who ultimately accepts power as a responsibility rather than an ambition.
Even with that in mind, it could be argued that Agatha's sins aren't as severe as Loki's. Though Loki has had a lot more time to make mistakes, Agatha's shortfalls comprise the murder of the Salem Coven, which was, in fairness, attempting to kill her. Then there are parallels to be drawn with the MCU's most tragic hero, Wanda, who found herself corrupted by the Darkhold after experiencing a substantial degree of trauma. Not much was revealed of Agatha's story in WandaVision, leaving the door wide open for the MCU to turn her into a far more sympathetic character with past actions explained by the Darkhold's corruption.
Why The MCU Should Make Agatha Harkness An Anti-Hero Agatha Harkness struck a chord with audiences as soon as she was introduced, much like Loki did in Thor. WandaVision set a bar for the MCU's Disney+ offerings that Marvel has struggled to replicate aside from Loki's solo series. Part of WandaVision's success could easily be attributed to Agatha's involvement, including her role as "Agnes," the nosy yet affable neighbor who was secretly pulling some strings of her own behind the scenes. The payoff of the series' twist that Agatha was a witch in possession of the Darkhold was among its most memorable and gripping moments, after all.
The likelihood is that Agatha: Darkhold Diaries will gloss over Agatha's image even if only slightly, as the MCU has yet to release a series or movie that focuses on an out-and-out villain. Not only that, but Agatha isn't a blatant villain in the comics, instead acting as Wanda's mentor at one point while interacting with other powerful Marvel magic users. Given the success of Loki, it would make more sense for Marvel to pivot Agatha's character to follow a similar road and turn into the MCU's newest lovable antihero.
