Deadpool 3"s Biggest Risk Officially Resolved For When Filming Restarts

Summary
  • Filming on Deadpool 3 was paused due to historic strikes in Hollywood, but now that the WGA strikes are ending, one major problem has been resolved.
  • The Writers Guild of America strike prevented Ryan Reynolds from improvising jokes during filming, posing a problem for the comedy-heavy film.
  • With the end of the strike, Reynolds will be able to improvise jokes again, either through re-filming certain scenes or using ADR to integrate unused jokes. The restart of filming is dependent on the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.
Filming on Deadpool 3 may soon be starting up again after historic striking brought Hollywood to a halt, but with the strikes coming to an end, one of the biggest problems from Deadpool 3's previous filming window will thankfully be avoided. After Disney's acquisition of Fox was finalized in 2019, Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool became the first character from another Marvel franchise to be confirmed to be joining the MCU. Deadpool 3's story was officially announced to be in development at Marvel Studios in December 2019, with principal photography for the film eventually beginning in March 2023, but filming paused only four-months-later as WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes began in May and July.
2023's Hollywood strikes marked the first time since 1960 that both the Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild had walked out simultaneously. The WGA went on strike in May 2023 in an effort to increase funding and security writers, limit the use of artificial intelligence, and receive better residual pay from streaming. Two-months-later, SAG-AFTRA joined the strike in solidarity, while also hoping to achieve stronger regulation on self-tape auditions. These strikes have had a monumental impact on in-production projects in Hollywood, including those in the MCU, but the WGA strike came to an end on September 27, which is great news for one upcoming Phase 5 movie in particular.
