Three years after disbanding in Captain America: Civil War, the MCU Avengers finally reformed, but the DCEU managed to solve their problem much sooner in 2016's Suicide Squad. Despite being heralded as the MCU's greatest superhero team, the members of the Avengers often clashed in ideologies, personalities, and methods, culminating in their dramatic disbanding in Civil War. This was instigated after the implementation of the Sokovia Accords, which would have demanded the Avengers be overseen by a United Nations panel, being run by the government rather than operating as a private organization. This theme hasn't only been seen in the MCU timeline, as the DCEU has also explored a government-owned team.
Suicide Squad released as the third film in Warner Bros.' DC Extended Universe, marking a divergence from stories focusing on high-profile heroes Superman and Batman. The 2016 film saw a team of villains brought together under the watchful eye of Viola Davis' Amanda Waller to battle a greater threat than any of them posed. While Suicide Squad received a mostly negative response, the film paved the way for James Gunn to direct The Suicide Squad in 2021, a standalone sequel that was much more positively received. Suicide Squad also addressed one of the key storylines from Captain America: Civil War, but managed to deal with the Avengers' problem with ease.
