Picard Season 3’s Enemies Brilliantly Complete Star Trek: TNG’s Story

Summary
  • The return of Q in the after-credits scene of Picard season 3 finale completes a story that began with the pilot episode of TNG, when Q first put humanity on trial.
  • Picard saves his son, Jack, from becoming a Borg and puts an end to the Borg threat once and for all.
  • While Q's return in Star Trek: Legacy is exciting, the Borg's story has reached a satisfying conclusion, but the unresolved story of Dr. Agnes Jurati and her apparently benevolent Borg Collective leaves room for future exploration.
The return of two of Jean-Luc Picard's (Patrick Stewart) greatest adversaries in Star Trek: Picard season 3 brilliantly wrapped up a Star Trek: The Next Generation story over 35 years in the making. Admiral Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise-D reunite in Picard season 3 to face off against one of Star Trek's best villains: the Borg. The Borg made their first appearance in TNG season 2, episode 16, "Q Who," when the omnipotent Q (John de Lancie) flung the Enterprise across the galaxy. It's fitting, then, that Picard season 3 also ended with an after-credit scene that featured the return of Q.
Captain Picard first met Q during the series premiere of Star Trek: The Next Generation when the omnipotent being put Picard and the crew of the Enterprise on trial for the crimes of humanity. Q would visit Picard several more times over the course of TNG, much to Jean-Luc's annoyance. While Q developed respect and even affection for Picard over his subsequent appearances on TNG, the Borg do no such thing. In their second appearance, in TNG season 3, episode 26, "The Best of Both Worlds," the Borg assimilate Captain Picard and use him as a mouthpiece in their devastating battle against the United Federation of Planets.
