Deadpool & Wolverine Perfectly Sets Up A Marvel Movie Dream I Never Thought Would Be Possible

Deadpool & Wolverine sets the stage for some Marvel Comics adaptations that I did not think were possible before the MCU. As everyone will undoubtedly be aware by now, Deadpool & Wolverine was a massive success for Marvel Studios. I was always expecting the film to do well, but Deadpool & Wolverine"s box office numbers are seriously impressive, as is the reaction from fans and critics. Deadpool & Wolverine is one of the best-ranked MCU movies since Avengers: Endgame, proving its appeal without box office receipts.
Despite the overall reaction, one aspect of the film that I was most surprised about was its tone. By the time of Deadpool & Wolverine"s ending, I was happy that the film balanced the self-referential, exaggerated humor of the Deadpool franchise with the darker, more mature elements that have always been prevalent. Hopefully, the list of upcoming MCU movies will get this balance right too, but until then, I am left excited for a Deadpool future I did not think was possible before Deadpool & Wolverine.
Many Of Deadpool's Best Comic Stories Seemed Impossible To Adapt On-Screen Deadpool & Deadpool 2 Did Not Offer Much Longevity Close While I admittedly enjoy Deadpool and Deadpool 2, their inclusion in Fox"s X-Men movie timeline meant the character was never likely to have a long-lasting cinematic presence. The Deadpool franchise only began when the Fox universe began dying down amid an inevitable takeover from Disney, meaning Wade Wilson"s journey would come to an end sooner rather than later. However, now that Deadpool is a part of the MCU, his future looks a lot brighter in terms of how long his story could last.
I am not saying Deadpool and Deadpool 2 had no emotional depth, but their focus on humor and the finite resources of the Fox universe meant these longer, drawn-out, hard-hitting stories were unlikely...
This would allow the MCU to delve into stories that require more depth and exploration, something I did not think would be possible in the Fox X-Men universe. Some examples of the stories I am talking about include Deadpool"s equally heartwarming and tragic connection with his daughter, Eleanor, or the darker arcs involving Wade"s attempts at suicide. I am not saying Deadpool and Deadpool 2 had no emotional depth, but their focus on humor and the finite resources of the Fox universe meant these longer, drawn-out, hard-hitting stories were unlikely.
After The First On-Screen Deadpool, It Never Seemed Like The Movies Would Fully Adapt The Antihero Deadpool's Two On-Screen Versions Did Not Suit His Darker Stories Close This brings me to the reasons why it seemed these stories would never be adapted. Beginning with the first Deadpool live-action appearance, there was the incredibly maligned X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Overall, the depiction of Deadpool in this movie was questionable. From the lack of the fast-talking character traits found in Marvel Comics to the highly inaccurate powers, X-Men Origins: Wolverine provided no hope that recurring Deadpool appearances could be accurately presented in Fox"s franchise.
Related The Best Order To Watch The X-Men Movies Fox"s X-Men franchise was instrumental in forming the modern superhero movie genre, but its fluctuating timelines and spin-offs can be confusing.
2 Of course, the reboot of Deadpool was immeasurably better than X-Men Origins: Wolverine. 2016"s Deadpool gave a much more accurate depiction of Wade Wilson and had a good blend of humor and emotional weight. However, I think many would agree when I say Deadpool and Deadpool 2 leaned much heavier into the comedic aspects of the character than the emotional ones. This meant that the adaptations of the longer, more mature storylines would never have felt completely right in this universe, despite attempts to pay homage to them, especially in Deadpool 2 where Wade attempts death by suicide.
Deadpool & Wolverine Sets Up Deadpool Stories That Previously Looked Impossible The MCU Gives Added Benefits For Adapting Longer Deadpool Stories Thanks to Deadpool & Wolverine, the idea of adapting the longer and darker Deadpool stories that I did not think were possible is now a reality. Firstly, the MCU is a franchise that will extend to 2030 and beyond. With Deadpool & Wolverine resonating so evidently with fans, the former character will likely continue to be part of the series as long as Reynolds wants to play him. This means longer-form stories involving Deadpool are possible, like introducing his daughter Eleanor. This way, the MCU could focus on their relationship across several stories in a way the Fox X-Men franchise could not.
Wade rekindling his relationship with Vanessa in Deadpool & Wolverine"s ending could set up the MCU"s version of Eleanor for future movies.
Similarly, the MCU proved with Deadpool & Wolverine that it did not change the exploration of the characters" darker sides. Deadpool was arguably at one of his lowest points in the trilogy due to his relationship with Vanessa breaking down and his feeling unneeded. The MCU has also proven that drastic changes in the status quo are possible, like when Thor: The Dark World transitioned into Thor: Ragnarok. This, combined with the R-rating of Deadpool movies, could see future installments go into darker territory.
Related 10 Most R Rated Moments In Deadpool & Wolverine Deadpool & Wolverine certainly maintains Deadpool"s R-rated cinematic stylings, with plenty of intense gore, foul-mouthed jokes and lewd visual gags.
Deadpool and Wolverine also focused on a more heartbreaking story for the latter character. While it did not show Wolverine"s backstory in the film, the idea of it was certainly darker than most stories besides Logan have tended to go with the character. Wolverine"s story also saw him address Wade in the fantastic car scene in Deadpool & Wolverine, again proving a willingness to focus on more mature themes. After Deadpool & Wolverine, my hopes of longer, more emotional stories about the Merc with a Mouth now seem more possible than I previously thought.
