Indiana Jones Director Describes His New DC Horror Movie & How It Fits Into DC Universe

James Mangold, who is attached to direct Swamp Thing for the DC Universe, clarifies how the horror film will tie into James Gunn's plans. While it was only a few years ago that Swamp Thing had his own live-action TV show, the iconic supernatural creature is coming back to the screen, but this time in theaters. One of the big projects that Gunn and Peter Safran revealed for Chapter 1, "Gods and Monsters," was a new Swamp Thing movie, with Logan and Indiana Jones director Mangold set to helm it.
While Swamp Thing is set in the DC Universe, Mangold has opened up more about how the reboot actually fits into Gunn's upcoming franchise. In an interview with Variety, the filmmaker shared how he got the gig, but also how Swamp Thing will be able to stand on its own without having any direct collision with the other Chapter 1 movies that are coming up. The way Mangold is approaching Swamp Thing is tackling it as a straight-up "clean, Gothic horror movie" that will tell the story of Alec Holland and how he becomes the titular DC character.
While I’m sure DC views ‘Swamp Thing’ as a franchise, I would be viewing it as a very simple, clean, Gothic horror movie about this man/monster. [I] put in a friendly call [when James Gunn and Peter Safran took the reins at DC last fall]. Just doing my own thing with this, just a standalone.
