Agatha"s Third Title Change Could Be Deeper Than You Realize

Summary
  • Agatha's title change hints at a possible role shift for the main character in the upcoming series.
  • The influence of the Darkhold on Agatha may no longer play a major role in the show's storyline.
  • With the Darkhold removed from the series title, Agatha may be able to explore a more heroic path in the MCU going forward.
Marvel's WandaVision spinoff has now undergone a third title change to simply be called Agatha, and its new title may hint at some major story details. When it was originally announced, the show was called Agatha: House of Harkness. Later, it was renamed Agatha: Coven of Chaos, likely referring to the other witches who will be joining Agatha in her series. The series' most recent title before this change was Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, referring to the magical book used by both Agatha and Scarlet Witch in the MCU timeline.
Agatha's most recent title change may simply be an effort to rebrand, but it could also signal a major change for the show's main character. This change will likely come down to what type of role the MCU Darkhold will play in the upcoming series. Depending on what happens, Agatha may be depicting a version of Agatha Harkness that is more in line with her Marvel Comics counterpart. This could even lead to an important role for her in the MCU's future.
Related MCU TV Show's Third Title Change Perfectly Pays Off WandaVision's Best Joke 3 Years Later A Marvel Cinematic Universe TV show has received a third title change in as many years, paying off a now-iconic joke from Phase 4’s WandaVision. Agatha Harkness Isn't Always Evil Agatha Harkness First Appeared In Fantastic Four #94 (1969) Close In the MCU, Agatha Harkness has only appeared in WandaVision, where she was a major antagonist. While she has had different allegiances in Marvel Comics over the years, Agatha hasn't always been depicted as a villain. In fact, she is more often a hero, has mentored characters like Scarlet Witch, and even taught at Doctor Strange's magic school, Strange Academy. Far back in her history, Agatha also helped try and stop people being killed in witch hunts during the 15th century.
Early on in her comic book history, Agatha served as a nanny for Franklin Richards. On several occasions, she uses her powers to help protect Franklin and other members of The Fantastic Four. With Agatha typically being a more heroic figure, her appearance as a villain in the MCU was far from the norm for the character. WandaVision also implied that perhaps this version of Agatha wasn't always a villain, and was simply corrupted by evil powers.
The Darkhold Has Corrupted MCU Heroes Before The Darkhold Is A Collection Of Evil Spells In The MCU In WandaVision, Agatha Harkness is in possession of the Darkhold - a powerful magical book that has the ability to corrupt those who read it. WandaVision showed some of Agatha's Darkhold corruption through her blackened fingers, implying that she would not have been a villain if not for the influence of the book. Though viewers unfamiliar with Agatha from the comics may have thought she was simply a villain, the true extent of the Darkhold's corrupting powers was fully demonstrated by its next user: Wanda Maximoff.
After getting the Darkhold from Agatha, Wanda begins exploring it, and she too becomes influenced by its evil powers. This leads to Wanda's villainous turn in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Just like Agatha, Wanda's fingers are stained by the book, making it clear that she isn't fully in control of herself during the events of the movie. This means, with the Darkhold no longer in her possession, Agatha may very well be a more heroic character like she typically is in Marvel Comics.
The Darkhold Might Not Play A Big Role In The Series Anymore Agatha's Latest Title Change Dropped "Darkhold" From Its Subtitle Agatha: Darkhold Diaries
Cast Kathryn Hahn , Patti LuPone , Miles Gutierrez-Riley , Aubrey Plaza , Emma Caulfield , Debra Jo Rupp Release Date 2024-00-00 Seasons 1 Streaming Service(s) Disney Plus Franchise(s) Marvel Cinematic Universe Showrunner Jac Schaeffer Until recently, Agatha was titled Agatha: Darkhold Diaries. Removing mention of the Darkhold from the title could signal that the book itself will not be playing as large of a role in the series anymore. If this is true, then it is likely Agatha will no longer be under its influence. The Darkhold's absence from the series would also make sense, given that it takes place after WandaVision. Though it may still appear in flashbacks, Agatha's title change makes it seem all the more likely that the book won't play a major role.
If the Darkhold won't be a major part of Agatha, it seems likely the MCU will be getting a more heroic version of the character going forward. This could mean Agatha teaming up with her original allies, The Fantastic Four, or perhaps working with Doctor Strange and Clea. Agatha may also get its own direct follow up, depending on how well it is received, seeing as Marvel will be trying to focus more heavily on direct sequels going forward.
