The 10 Most Important Alien Races In Star Wars

Star Wars is known for its wide array of alien races, but a few species end up being the most important to the franchise. Luke Skywalker's first trip to the Mos Eisley Cantina offered a sample of the countless aliens from across the galaxy, some more dangerous than others. Each new Star Wars movie and TV show adds more alien races to the franchise's catalog, expanding the galaxy's history and introducing new kinds of characters. While many of these characters made an impression on the timeline through their own merit, some alien races as a whole proved to have the greatest impact on the wider galaxy.
Having other notable alien races shape the Star Wars timeline is always refreshing in a story largely dominated by human characters. Humans may be the largest species in the Star Wars galaxy, but it's fun to step into other alien cultures that handle problems differently and offer a new perspective on galactic events. Some species unwillingly showcased the Galactic Empire at its worst, being primarily made up of humans that were encouraged to look down on other aliens. Despite this, 10 alien races in Star Wars played a large role in shaping the saga and are therefore the most important to the franchise.
8 The Wookiees Chewbacca's appearance in the original Star Wars movie made the Wookiees one of the franchise's first alien races, and later stories proved just how important they were. The Star Wars Expanded Universe, now branded as "Legends," originally revealed that the Empire enslaved Chewbacca and the other Wookiees, forcing them to help construct Imperial stations, including the Death Star. A young Imperial named Han Solo intervened to save Chewbacca, leading to his discharge and the grateful Wookiee swearing a life debt. Much of this story carried over to Disney's Star Wars canon, making the Wookiees the most glaring example of the Empire's cruelty.
7 The Mon Calamari The Mon Calamari were also oppressed by the Empire, but they played an essential role in forming the Rebel Alliance. They were renowned for their construction of powerful warships, and this eventually formed the foundation of the rebel fleet, giving the alliance a fighting chance against the Empire's overwhelming forces. Several notable Mon Calamari helped defeat the Empire, namely Admiral Gial Ackbar, who oversaw the second Death Star's destruction at the Battle of Endor. Admiral Raddus scored the Alliance's first major victory by aiding Rogue One at the Battle of Scarif, sacrificing his life to secure the Death Star plans.
