Star Wars is known for its wide array of alien races, but a few species end up being the most important to the franchise. A young Imperial named Han Solo intervened to save Chewbacca, leading to his discharge and the grateful Wookiee swearing a life debt. 7 The Mon Calamari The Mon Calamari were also oppressed by the Empire, but they played an essential role in forming the Rebel Alliance. They were renowned for their construction of powerful warships, and this eventually formed the foundation of the rebel fleet, giving the alliance a fighting chance against the Empire's overwhelming forces. Several notable Mon Calamari helped defeat the Empire, namely Admiral Gial Ackbar, who oversaw the second Death Star's destruction at the Battle of Endor. Admiral Raddus scored the Alliance's first major victory by aiding Rogue One at the Battle of Scarif, sacrificing his life to secure the Death Star plans.
