"That"s Super Depressing": Chris Hemsworth Hits Back At Scorsese & Tarantino"s MCU Criticism

Thor actor Chris Hemsworth is not happy about directors Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese's Marvel Cinematic Universe criticism. It is no secret that Marvel Studios has been going through a rough patch with critics and fans after an uneven Phase 4, and one of the people most affected by that wave of criticism was Hemsworth, whose Thor: Love and Thunder became one of the MCU's most criticized films. Chief among the complaints over the years are those by famous directors Scorsese and Tarantino.
Speaking with GQ, Hemsworth addressed Tarantino and Scorsese's comments about the MCU, as well as the broader wave of criticism Marvel has been receiving. Hemsworth was saddened by the directors' comments, saying, "There goes two of my heroes I won’t work with." The actor goes on to state that he is happy about the MCU's role in keeping people going to cinemas. Hemsworth also mentioned that he is not a fan of people scrutinizing each other in the world of arts due to the fragility of it all. Check out the full quote below:
That’s super depressing when I hear that. There goes two of my heroes I won’t work with. I guess they’re not a fan of me. I’m thankful that I have been a part of something that kept people in cinemas. Now, whether or not those films were to the detriment of other films, I don’t know. I don’t love when we start scrutinising each other when there’s so much fragility in the business and in this space of the arts as it is… I say that less to the directors who made those comments, who are all, by the way, still my heroes, and in a heartbeat I would leap to work with any of them. But I say it more to the broader opinion around that topic.
Why Tarantino & Scorsese Look Down On The MCU Last year, Tarantino explained why he dislikes Marvel movies. The director is an interesting case amid the criticism that surrounds the MCU, as Tarantino revealed that he used to be a big Marvel fan as a kid, saying he "used to collect Marvel comics like crazy." Tarantino also revealed that he believes if Marvel movies had started coming out when he was in his twenties, then he would have loved them. However, as they currently stand, Tarantino sees a problem.
The director believes that Marvel movies seem to be the only kind of films getting made in Hollywood today, to the detriment of other kinds of movies. Tarantino is also unhappy about how Marvel movies appear to be the only films that "generate any kind of excitement amongst a fan base or even for the studio making them." Tarantino's opinion is shared by other high-profile Hollywood directors, with Scorsese being the first one to make a splash in the news with his negative opinions towards the MCU.
Scorsese saying that Marvel movies are not cinema turned into the main slogan for those campaigning against the MCU. The director compared Marvel movies to theme parks, as he believes they escape the art of conveying emotion that he thinks of as cinema. Scorsese has since made additional comments about Marvel movies, with the director echoing Tarantino's sentiment that he might have loved the MCU and perhaps even wanted to direct a Marvel movie himself had they come out when he was younger. In the end, Scorsese and Tarantino just do not want MCU movies to be the only kind of films that get made.
