Bautista"s Guardians Of The Galaxy Complaint Makes Him Perfect To Fix An 8-Year-Old X-Men Villain Disaster

Summary
  • Bautista wants to play an ominous villain in the superhero universe after moving on from Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.
  • Apocalypse from X-Men is a perfect fit for Bautista's deeper role criteria and would avoid the long makeup processes he dislikes.
  • It could be hard to find a villain for Bautista to play in the MCU, given his face is already so tied to Drax. A CGI Apocalypse could alleviate that issue.
Drax actor Dave Bautista has clarified that he'd like to play an MCU villain, and a maligned X-Men movie character may set him up for the perfect one. A new Guardians team forms at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but with none of the original team members dying in the movie, it's kept speculation alive over whether characters like Drax and Nebula could still be seen in future projects. However, it seems like at least one cast member is truly done for good.
Speaking to io9, Dave Bautista clarified that his journey as Drax is completely over. However, he also revealed what he'd like to look for in a future Marvel movie role. Fortunately, a massive X-Men movie misstep means one iconic character could perfectly fit Bautista's goals while side-stepping some of his problems with playing Drax.
Bautista Is Done With Drax, But Not With Superhero Movies Close Bautista has been quite clear with his intentions to move on from Drax after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, so his further clarification isn't unexpected. What is more surprising is that he seems so interested and eager to play another Marvel character so soon. In his io9 interview, Bautista shared what he's looking to do and avoid in future superhero movie roles. Read his comments below:
I just would like the opportunity to do a bigger role, a different role. Maybe a deeper role. I’d love to have the opportunity to play, like an ominous villain in the superhero universe.
Moreover, Bautista went on to explain that he's still very much in contact with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and executive producer Louis D'Esposito as recently as two weeks ago (as of the time of the interview) and that they know he's interested in future opportunities. Of course, the question is how Bautista, whose face and form are barely disguised under the Drax makeup and has become such a pop culture icon, could be recast in a new role without it seeming odd. Fortunately, the X-Men have a villain deep enough and with a look that bypasses this concern.

Apocalypse Meets Bautista's Criteria For A Deeper Role The X-Men's most famous villain (and sometimes ally) is undoubtedly Magneto. While Dave Bautista doesn't seem like a good fit for the Master of Magnetism, the powerful En Sabah Nur, better known as Apocalypse, has been given new depth in recent years. In the disappointing X-Men: Apocalypse, the titular villain is barely explained and only moves forward with a goal of destruction and consolation of power for its own sake. Such a black-and-white, mustache-twirling villain isn't befitting of Apocalypse in Marvel Comics, especially in more recent years, where he's operated in shades of gray.

Without delving too much into modern X-Men comics lore, Apocalypse has evolved from a harbinger of destruction in the name of culling the weak to a complicated villain willing to move beyond simple definitions of hero or villain to do whatever it takes in the name of mutant survival. While "doing whatever it takes" isn't a new concept for a villain, Apocalypse has perhaps been better written than most other examples. Should he appear in the MCU, Bautista could embody a character that genuinely escapes definition and befits his goal of an ominous and emotionally complex being.
X-Men: Apocalypse's Villain Complaint Is Perfect For Bautista's Discomfort With Long Makeup Processes Close Oscar Isaac is an undeniably talented actor, as proven by several other projects (including his leading role in Marvel's Moon Knight), but even he wasn't able to elevate a poor script and makeup that completely missed the mark. In Marvel Comics, Apocalypse is a massive, hulking beast of a mutant with a physical presence that his power and intellect support. X-Men: Apocalypse's version looks more like a Power Ranger villain. If Apocalypse returns in the MCU, which he should, the character would be much better off handled with CGI and motion capture like Thanos.
This is only important because it perfectly solves two other issues with a Bautista recast. Though Dave Bautista still sports a wildly impressive physique, he's also been vocal about not wanting to keep his professional wrestling-level body up now that he's in his mid-50s. Bautista went so far as to say it's one of the reasons he's done with Drax, so a CGI character with his likeness would ease the physical burden. Moreover, playing a digital version of the X-Men "villain" would help mask his appearance and make his MCU return after playing Drax a bit less jarring.
