Deadpool & Wolverine Box Office Closes In On 11-Year-Old MCU Movie In Highest-Grossing Films Of All-Time

Summary
  • Deadpool & Wolverine is climbing the charts as one of the highest-grossing releases of all time.
  • It is now the 27th highest-grossing movie, closing in on Iron Man 3's total of $1.215 billion.
  • There are still quite a few MCU movies ahead of Deadpool & Wolverine in the all-time rankings.
Deadpool & Wolverine is closing in on an 11-year-old Marvel Cinematic Universe movie as it continues to climb up the chart of the all-time highest-grossing releases. The release, which co-stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, is simultaneously the 34th installment in the MCU and the third installment in the Deadpool franchise, which is itself a subfranchise of Fox's now-defunct X-Men franchise. The Deadpool & Wolverine box office has broken numerous records as it quickly rose past $1 billion, including becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.
Per Variety, the Deadpool & Wolverine box office has climbed past the $1.159 billion worldwide total of the animated smash hit Minions. This makes it the 27th highest-grossing movie of all time. The next movie in its sights is the 26th highest-grossing movie of all time, which is the MCU's own Iron Man 3, an early installment which premiered in 2013 and ended up grossing a whopping total of $1.215 billion, meaning that Deadpool will have to earn roughly $56 million more worldwide in order to surpass it.
What Other MCU Movies Are Above Iron Man 3? Deadpool & Wolverine Is Currently The Eighth Highest-Grossing MCU Movie Close While Deadpool & Wolverine's record-breaking climb could very well see it rise higher than Iron Man 3, it remains to be seen if it can topple any other previous installments. The next-highest entry would be 2018's Black Panther, which is currently the 17th highest-grossing movie of all time and would require an additional $160 million to surpass. That would be a tall order for a movie that is already in its fifth weekend in theaters, and there are even more titles beyond it. Below, see a breakdown of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies above Deadpool on the all-time chart:
Rank
Title
Worldwide Box Office
#2
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
$2.799 billion
#6
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
$2.052 billion
#7
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
$1.928 billion
#11
The Avengers (2012)
$1.520 billion
#16
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2016)
$1.405 billion
#17
Black Panther (2018)
$1.375 billion
#26
Iron Man 3 (2013)
$1.215 billion
#27
Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)
~$1.160 billion
Ultimately, if the Deadpool & Wolverine release is able to surpass Black Panther, it could potentially break into the Top 5 MCU movies of all time, as Avengers: Age of Ultron is the next movie past it on the overall chart. However, breaking into the MCU's Top 3 would be a near impossibility. The record-breaking Spider-Man: No Way Home, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame all boast the type of potent legacy characters as the 2024 title, but combined with PG-13 ratings that made all of those titles available to a broader ticket-buying audience.
However, even if Deadpool & Wolverine never rises past being the seventh highest-grossing MCU movie, this is a remarkable achievement, considering the fact that it is the franchise's first R-rated installment. The PG-13 franchise took a risk on maintaining the more adult-oriented tone and fourth-wall-breaking humor of the property after acquiring the 20th Century Studios library and deciding to fold it into the MCU at large, and it has clearly paid massive dividends.
