MCU’s Kang Design May Reveal How RDJ’s Doctor Doom Will Pull Off The Marvel Villain’s Iconic Mask

The Kang design used by the Marvel Cinematic Universe may have already shed light on what to expect from the franchise"s version of Doctor Doom, especially in terms of how it could look to pull off the villain"s distinctive mask. With Avengers 5 going from Avengers: The Kang Dynasty to Avengers: Doomsday, it"s clear that Doctor Doom has taken over from Kang in the Multiverse Saga following Marvel cutting ties with actor Jonathan Majors. However, this has raised more questions than it answers in a lot of ways, especially with Robert Downey Jr. being cast as the MCU"s Doctor Doom.
While many of these questions have been regarding how this will affect the legacy of Robert Downey Jr"s Iron Man and whether Doom will tie into Tony Stark"s overall story in the MCU timeline, there are also several pressing mysteries regarding how the franchise will handle its depiction of the villain itself in upcoming Marvel releases. Mercifully, the backdrop that the franchise has already established teases of what its potential road forward will look like via the way it"s depicted prior villains like Kang, especially since its casting makes certain approaches more likely than others.
Robert Downey Jr's Doctor Doom Casting Means The MCU Will Want To Show His Face More Robert Downey Jr's Casting Raises Questions About A Big Part Of Doctor Doom's Character Close The reveal that Robert Downey Jr. would be playing the MCU"s Doctor Doom in the MCU brought many questions to the forefront for audiences, with one of the most interesting being how this affect a core aspect of the character - namely, his iconic face-covering mask. While RDJ"s Iron Man was also often shown in a mask in the MCU, the hero"s suit operated in a different capacity, serving solely as armor that Tony Stark was perfectly willing to shed when not in scenarios that called for it - thus ensuring the actor"s face was seen just as frequently throughout his appearances.

3 For Victor Von Doom, however, the matter of his mask is very different. Conventionally, Doctor Doom wears his mask in a far more committed fashion, using it to conceal his scarred face and rarely taking it off - though different iterations in the comics have different levels of scarring, with some being full-face wounds, and some being small scars that Doom"s vanity caused him to have an immense reaction to, leading him to don the red-hot mask in haste and scar himself that way.
Either way, Victor"s reaction to what he perceives as his own imperfections are integral to his story, and altering this by tweaking how the mask is used thus risks messing with the formula that makes him work. This is doubly true since the mask is the first thing most people think of when they think of Doctor Doom, and thus any changes are likely to also change their perception of the figure in a major way.
As such, having Robert Downey Jr. wear a mask for almost his entire time as Doctor Doom makes the most sense for the character - but it"s also an approach that goes some way to waste the actor"s talents, and the subsequent considerable paycheck it"s believed Downey Jr"s return will earn him. With this in mind, it"s likely the MCU will turn to the same approach used for Kang, especially since those involved in creating the design have explained in depth about how they approached the matter of giving the villain a face-covering mask that still showed his face.
The MCU's Kang Mask Focus May Reveal How The Franchise Will Handle RDJ's Doctor Doom The Design Approach For The MCU's Kang Seems To Set Up The Approach To Doctor Doom's Mask Close Focusing on a villain whose mask presents some visual complications is not a new challenge for the MCU, as prior villain Kang also presented some of the same issues on a design level. In Marvel Entertainment"s "How Jonathan Majors Inspired Kang"s Design" video on Youtube, two figures who played crucial roles in creating the design of the MCU"s Kang - that of Director of Visual Development Andy Park and concept artist Constantine Sekeris - explained a little about the decisions made for the character"s appearance in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, including his mask.
Sekeris mentioned that "we had played with a clear face shield that allowed then the actor to not have something on his face or cover up his face," with Park stating, "it was very important for Peyton and the leadership of Marvel to not lose his performance." Given Robert Downey Jr"s performance is arguably even more crucial to not lose, it"s likely this approach will also be one that"s looked at for his return as Doctor Doom, since forgoing the mask or having the actor"s face go unseen both seem like options that would present issues for the franchise.
Similarly, as Marvel"s Kang video shows just how many designs were made in the process of finalizing the character"s suit and mask in the MCU, there"s clearly a lot of pre-existing work on this concept that the franchise could utilize and analyze when deciding Doom"s own appearance. While it"s unlikely the movie Doctor Doom will have an energy mask like Kang, the research into the textures that can make a mask layer over a character"s face look like a perfect springboard for the process of creating Robert Downey Jr"s take on the iconic Marvel villain, even if the parallels between Doom and Kang aren"t universal.
Doctor Doom's Marvel Comics Backstory Would Justify A Face-Molded Mask For The MCU The Marvel Comics Lore Comes With A Way To Justify A Mask That Still Shows The Actor's Face Close The comic lore for Doctor Doom"s metal mask is something that would need relatively little in the way of adjustments in order to justify Robert Downey Jr"s version being molded to the actor"s face, if this is the approach the MCU takes with the villain. Conventionally, Victor Von Doom is shown with a mask that is fitted to the dimensions of his own face. With Doom"s modern history having him don the mask still hot from the forge, it"s possible this origin story could be approached in a way that justifies a far more face-fitting design in the MCU.
Indeed, having Doctor Doom"s MCU mask molded into his face would underline the horror of this part of his story, and serve as a reminder of this chapter of his life, as well as a heads-up about how intensely the villain commits to his plans and seeing them through, no matter the cost. All this in mind, while the matter of how the MCU will handle introducing Doctor Doom into its story isn"t yet clear, there"s a lot of established precedents that suggest promising things for the franchise.
