MCU Theory Explains Recent Retcon That Changed Thor’s Origin

Summary
  • Thor's appearance as a statue in Loki season 2 contradicts his statement in The Avengers, suggesting his memory may have been altered prior to his MCU debut.
  • The theory that Thor's memory was wiped by Odin before 2011's Thor explains the retcon in Loki season 2 and has a basis in Marvel Comics.
  • This theory could also explain other MCU mysteries, such as Thor's gullibility towards Loki's illusions and tricks.
Thor's MCU origin story was retconned during Loki season 2, episode 3, but one new theory might help to explain this new plot hole. Chris Hemsworth hasn't made an appearance in the MCU as the Asgardian God of Thunder, Thor, since 2022's Thor: Love and Thunder, but his likeness did pop up during Loki and Mobius' mission to the Chicago World's Fair in Loki season 2, episode 3, "1893." The Tom Hiddleston-led series has made several references to Thor and Asgardian history, yet Thor's appearance as a statue alongside Odin and Balder the Brave in Loki season 2 inadvertently retconned his MCU backstory by contradicting one line from The Avengers.
During The Avengers, Thor claims in a conversation with Phil Coulson that the first time he ever ventured to Earth was during 2011's Thor. He states, "when I first came to Earth, Loki's rage followed me and your people paid the price. And now again." However, Thor's statue as it appears in Loki season 2, episode 3, depicts the God of Thunder as an adult alongside Odin and Balder, suggesting he did travel to Earth at some point prior to the battle in New Mexico during 2011's Thor. This change in Loki season 2 retcons Thor's MCU origins, but one new theory could provide an explanation for this plot hole.

Loki's Thor Change Hints The MCU Hero's Memory Was Altered The fact that Thor believes that his first adventure on Earth happened in 2011 - while Loki season 2 seems to prove this can't be the case - suggests that the Avenger's memory may have been altered at some point prior to his MCU debut. Evidently, if Odin had wiped Thor's memory at some point during his past, there'd be no way for the God of Thunder to have delivered this information, explaining how it could have stayed hidden for so long. Thor's memory being altered prior to 2011's Thor could answer why the originators of Norse mythology worshiped him as an adult God, even though Thor appears to have no recollection of these adventures to Earth.
