DC Fans Criticize Zachary Levi’s Childish Performance In Shazam 2

DC fans have taken to social media to criticize Zachary Levi's performance in Shazam! Fury of the Gods for being too childish. The sequel to Shazam! has bombed at the box office, with projections for the movie failing to even get close to those of the original. Given the fact that Shazam! was not one of the billion-dollar blockbusters that have become somewhat common in the genre, the low box office numbers of Shazam! Fury of the Gods may spell doom for the franchise. The Shazam! sequel's faults have been commented all over social media, and Levi's performance is the latest to receive criticism.
Levi plays the superhero Shazam, the alter ego of Billy Batson, a teenager played by Asher Angel. While Angel's acting in both movies of the franchise has mostly received praise, Levi's performance has been deemed childish, especially due to the fact that the actor should be playing an older version of Angel's character, which most of the time does not seem to be the case given differences in how Shazam and Billy behave. Some DC fans have taken to Twitter to voice their criticisms of Levi's childish performance, with Angel himself potentially having liked a comment, but then undoing it. Fury Of The Gods' Family Evidenced The Difference Between Billy & Shazam Throughout the first movie, the story heavily focuses on Billy Batson and how he deals with becoming the superhero known as Shazam. By the end of the original Shazam!, Billy decides to share his gifts with his family by chanting the magic words and letting the Wizard's staff share Shazam's powers around. Enter the Shazam Family, who helped the hero in the first movie's final fight and had an expanded role in Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
With a whole cast of characters alternating seamlessly between their older and younger versions, the disconnect between the acting of Shazam actor Levi and Billy interpreter Angel became incredibly obvious. In both movies, Billy is portrayed as a calm and collected teen, while he completely transforms into the childish and talkative Shazam played by Levi. It does not help that in both movies, the character's pivotal emotional scenes come when Angel is on-screen, with his biological mother in the first and foster mother in the second, while Levi gets a bigger screen time but lesser emotional impact.
