Why Original Smallville Creators Al Gough & Miles Millar Left After Season 7

Summary
  • Smallville's original creators, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, left the show because it had outlasted their initial vision for it, with Gough stating that they wanted to get to five seasons but ended up with ten.
  • Gough and Millar felt that Smallville had outlived its original concept of a teenage Clark Kent, as the show's ten-season run could be split into five seasons of adolescence and five seasons of young adulthood before becoming Superman.
  • The departure of Gough and Millar makes a potential revival of Smallville unlikely, as Gough does not have a major desire to return to the Smallville universe. However, a continuation or crossover in the DC multiverse could still happen without their direct involvement.
Smallville ran for 10 seasons, but the show's original creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar departed after season seven. Smallville was steeped heavily in the lore of the DC Universe, and focused upon a young Clark Kent (Tom Welling) developing his powers in his adolescence, and his long journey to eventually becoming Superman. With that foundation in place, Smallville followed a "No tights, no flights" rule until its finale (with that rule occasionally being bent a few times as Smallville's decade-long story required).
With Smallville beginning with Clark Kent as a high school freshman, the show depicts his journey to not only becoming Superman but his journey to adulthood, with Clark also meeting other superheroes and forming Smallville's version of the Justice League. Despite telling such a sprawling Superman tale, Smallville's creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar decided to leave the show after season seven, with Gough and Millar going on to create other TV series like Into the Badlands, The Sahara Chronicles, and Wednesday. While Gough and Millar never gave an official reason for their Smallville departure, a few statements made by the two indicate why they chose to do so.
