Summary
- Dropping Kang from Avengers 5 opens up new storylines for the MCU to explore.
- Avengers: Secret Wars could be a two-part movie that pays homage to the history of the MCU.
- The X-Men's arrival and a House of M adaptation could introduce mutants and set up Avengers: Secret Wars.
The MCU is reeling from the effects of Jonathan Majors' conviction this week and has reportedly dropped "Kang" from the title of
Avengers 5 entirely - which opens up a slew of new stories that it can focus on instead. Majors' departure from the MCU comes at a time when Marvel has reportedly been eyeing new routes for the franchise to go in anyway, after his debut big-screen appearance in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantummania fell flat financially and critically. Following some significant shake-ups in the production surrounding Avengers 5, this could now be the opportunity for Marvel to justify pivoting from Kang to something else.
On that front, it isn't like the MCU is lacking in possible alternative storylines for Avengers 5 to adapt. Several threads have been teased and set up with ample time between now and the events of Avengers 5 to pay them off. While Kang has been the presumed big bad of the Multiverse Saga thus far, the MCU is not as cornered as it might have been if Kang had appeared a few more times. In fact, there is an argument to suggest that Kang has been dealt with sufficiently enough for the MCU to start moving on.
RelatedEvery Upcoming Marvel Movie: Full MCU Phase 5 & 6 List (& Beyond)Between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment, here is every upcoming Marvel movie release date and what we know about the projects so far. 10 The MCU Could Introduce Secret Wars Part 1 And 2 Avengers: Secret Wars Is Slated For Release In May 2027
Regardless of how jarring it might be to drop Kang from Avengers 5, there is arguably far more buzz surrounding the Multiverse Saga's final movie, Avengers: Secret Wars, anyway. This critically acclaimed comic book run is among the most consequential in Marvel history and arguably one that could stand to be adapted across the space of two movies rather than one. As the movie is rumored to precede a soft reboot for the MCU as a whole,
Avengers: Secret Wars should be afforded enough wriggle room to properly pay homage to the two decades of movies that led to this point.
9 Avengers 5 Could Change To The "Immortus" Dynasty Immortus Was Introduced In Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantummania (2023)
The MCU is no stranger to recasting roles, with the likes of Bruce Banner and Rhodey being portrayed by different actors without the need to explain away their new appearance. Regardless, there is no better time than now to easily explain why Kang looks different, thanks to the established rules surrounding variants, which can look identical or belong to an entirely different species (such as Alligator Loki). Recasting Kang, therefore, is as simple as it ever could have been.
As for why Marvel has dropped "Kang" from the title, it could help explain this change. Immortus, for instance, is one of Kang's most fearsome variants, and while the MCU could still move ahead with the planned Kang-focused story for Avengers 5,
it could instead title the new movie with the unique name of a Kang variant. That way, the slightly jarring nature of having the actor change entirely could be easier to fathom.
8 Avengers 5 Could Replace Kang's Storyline With Loki's Loki Became The God Of Stories In The Loki Season 2 Finale (November 10, 2023) Close Loki was the MCU property that featured Kang most heavily, having his variants He Who Remains and Victor Timely play central roles in the narrative. Despite this, both were rightfully sidelined by the eponymous hero himself, who concluded his solo series by becoming the MCU's most powerful character. With that in mind,
it is hard to see how a Multiverse Saga would not focus heavily on the character responsible for facilitating the Multiverse to begin with. With Kang's name being dropped from the penultimate Avengers movie, Loki has been perfectly set up as the literal center of the Multiverse Saga.
7 House Of M - Marvel Could Introduce Mutants By Pitting Them Against Non-Mutants The X-Men Debuted In The Marvels (2023)
If sentiments surrounding Kang have been lackluster since his involvement in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantummania, the same cannot be said for the arrival of MCU mutants. Between the post-credits scene of The Marvels and the upcoming involvement of Fox's X-Men characters in Deadpool 2, mutants have already been making themselves known in the MCU. How the franchise intends to introduce them in earnest, however, remains to be seen - but there is one story that could introduce mutants with a bang while setting up the events of Avengers: Secret Wars.
An adaptation of House of M could be the way to do this.
Centering Avengers 5 around the arrival of the X-Men into the MCU could be the pivot that Marvel needs, as Kang doesn't seem to elicit half as much excitement as the X-Men do. This would, however, require the X-Men to be antagonists - something that a House of M-style story (in which Magneto has successfully positioned mutants to be superior to non-mutants) could easily facilitate. Having the mutants of an alternate universe go toe-to-toe with the Avengers of Earth-616 could then spark an incursion from which the events of Avengers: Secret Wars are born.
6 World War Hulk Looks Even More Likely Hulk's Son, Skaar, Debuted In She-Hulk: Attorney At Law (2022)
With the arrival of Hulk's son, Skaar, came the biggest hint yet that the MCU will be adapting a World War Hulk story sometime in the future. This would entail positioning Banner as the movie's antagonist, finally allowing him to show the true power of Hulk, which the MCU has nerfed significantly over the years.
A World War Hulk adaptation involving the Illuminati and a heart-wrenching plot pitting the founding Avengers against one another would have a huge impact and could double as a route to sunset Banner and others in lieu of the MCU's newest collection of Avengers.
5 Galactus Could Pose A Bigger Threat Galactus Is Rumored To Appear In Fantastic Four (2025)
Galactus is the presumed big bad of the upcoming Fantastic Four movie. He is, however, a gargantuan threat to the universe and one that could easily become the main villain in a larger story. The Fantastic Four have been able to best the world-eater in the past, but the MCU could demonstrate the true power of this iconic antagonist by replacing Kang with him instead. A being of his size and destructive abilities would certainly remedy the somewhat lacking threat levels that Kang has posed so far.
4 Renslayer Could Replace Kang In The Same Story Ravonna Renslayer Was Last Seen Alive In Loki (2023) Close Ravonna Renslayer's story was left open-ended and distinctly separate from Kang, despite her character being tied closely to him in the comics. Her final scene in Loki saw her come up against Alioth, the beast that He Who Remains tamed and used to defeat his variants in the Multiversal War. With that in mind, Renslayer is currently face-to-face with a proven ace in the hole when it comes to facing off against Kang, setting her up to be Kang's worst nightmare - and perhaps even his replacement. With Kang's tech and destructive pet at her disposal, there is every chance for Renslayer to usurp the arch-villain.
3 Fantastic Four May Introduce Doom, Who Could Play A Bigger Role In Avengers 5 Doctor Doom Could Make His Debut In Fantastic Four (2025)
One of the prevailing theories when it comes to how Marvel intends to pivot from Kang (if that is the goal) is that Doctor Doom - one of Marvel's most iconic villains - will take his place as the arch-villain of the Multiverse Saga. As the arch-nemesis of the Fantastic Four specifically, the MCU's Fantastic Four movie - which is set to release in 2025 - would be a suitable debut outing for the villain before being suitably set up for his Avengers 5 role. Having him replace Kang as the actual main threat (perhaps by having him eliminate Kang entirely) would only help to bolster his threat levels.
As Doctor Doom is almost certain to be the main villain of Avengers: Secret Wars, having him take a central role in the two final Avengers movies wouldn't be too much of a stretch for Marvel. Additionally, Doctor Doom is given a significant promotion for his role in the Secret Wars run of comics, soaring to the status of "God Emperor" over the Battleworld. For this to have the impact it should, Doom should be introduced ahead of Avengers: Secret Wars in a prominent role.
2 Avengers 5 May Focus On Multiverse Incursions Incursions Were Explored In Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness (2022)
Avengers: Secret Wars is a story that requires a significant incursion to occur before seeing its main characters take refuge in Doom's "Battleworld." The concept, first introduced in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, has yet to bear much fruit in the wider MCU narrative, which means
Avengers 5 could focus on the effects of the incursion supposedly caused by Strange in the events of his most recent movie. The sheer wealth of variants that could be explored as part of this incursion (or multiple) takes the pressure off of making Kang a central figure.
1 Avengers 5 Could Focus On The Backdrop For The New MCU Hero Team Avengers 5 (2026) Should Be The New Team's Debut Outing Together Close By the time Avengers 5 releases, it will have been the longest period between Avengers movies ever. Throughout this time, the newest iteration of the eponymous heroes has been sparsely featured within the MCU, with the recent failure of The Marvels indicating that audiences aren't as invested in the new Avengers as the original team. With this in mind,
Avengers 5 could stand to facilitate the first assemblage of the new Avengers as a primary focus. Whatever story Marvel decides to pursue to do this,
Avengers 5 should prioritize centralizing these characters regardless, and having Kang take a backseat is a conducive measure to this end.
