A Tale Of Two Timelines: Why Star Wars" New Timeline Works So Much Better Than The MCU"s

Summary
  • The established Star Wars timeline is more cohesive, thanks to its longer history and experience handling continuity across various media formats.
  • Both the Star Wars and MCU timeline guides provide comprehensive and visually appealing layouts, highlighting key events and character moments.
  • Star Wars takes a more flexible approach to continuity, embracing the concept of "a certain point of view" and allowing for multiple interpretations, while the MCU acknowledges its continuity errors but may be less proactive in correcting them.
Although they have their similarities, the established Star Wars timeline seems to work better than the MCU's. With both Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios each having large interconnected franchises tying all of their films and shows together as overarching narratives, it's rather impressive to look at all they've both accomplished. However, neither is without its flaws, though Star Wars does seem to have a more robust continuity overall.
Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm have both released timeline guides only within a few months of each other in 2023. DK's Star Wars Timelines was released in April while Marvel Studios The Marvel Cinematic Universe An Official Timeline released in October. As such, it's worth comparing the two timelines using official materials from both studios. Each offers definitive dates and key insights into their respective continuity, though there are also critical differences in the structure as well as how each franchise has chosen to handle any inaccuracies or contradictions. Here's a comparison of both timelines and the key reasons why Star Wars' timeline seems to work the best.
