Star Trek"s God War Is Secretly About the Franchise"s Terrible Dads

The Klingon Emperor Kahless is fulfilling his namesake’s destiny by slaughtering the god-like beings of the galaxy, and it has fallen on Captain Sisko and the crew of the USS Theseus, including Worf, to stop him. As seen in both Star Trek #5 and Star Trek: Defiant #1, a secret theme has emerged from the conflict–the strained relationships between fathers and sons in the Star Trek universe.
In the pages of Star Trek, Captain Sisko is struggling to reconnect with his son Jake, and in the fifth issue, written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and drawn by Ramon Rosanas and Erik Tamayo, Jake beams down to the God City of T’Kon to help his father stop the city from awakening. Kahless, in his god-killer starship, opens fire, and Jake is seriously hurt in the process. In the same issue, Worf learns his estranged son Alexander has joined Kahless’ Red Path cult, which forces him to rethink his strategy. Worf breaks with Captain Sisko in Star Trek: Defiant #1, written by Christopher Cantwell and drawn by Angel Unzueta, and undertakes a covert mission to bring down the Red Path. He is joined in his quest by Mister Spock, Ro Laren, Lore and B’Elanna Torres.
