The Flash Box Office May Crash Harder Than Shazam 2 With Worse-Than-Expected 2nd Weekend Drop

The Flash is crashing hard in its second weekend at the box office. The movie, which opened in theaters on June 16, is the latest entry in the DC Universe, following the titular speedster Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) as he accidentally finds himself in an alternate reality after going back in time to prevent his mother's murder. At the domestic box office, it raked in a lukewarm opening weekend of $55 million, the third-worst for the entire franchise.
Per Variety, the The Flash box office is flagging even harder than expected in its second weekend. Although it was projected for a drop around 60 percent, it is currently on track to drop over 70 percent by the end of Sunday, even lower than Shazam! Fury of the Gods' recent startling drop of 68 percent. This means, instead of battling for first place, the movie is jockeying for the No. 3 slot with the Jennifer Lawrence comedy No Hard Feelings, falling behind both the holdover hit Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and the lukewarm Pixar outing Elemental.
How is DC Going To Dig Out Of This Box Office Rut? The Flash is a movie that was plagued with issues heading into its opening weekend. First, there is the matter that the DC Universe is currently being retooled by new DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, making any films featuring the current iterations of the Justice League heroes feel less relevant. Among other issues including severe production delays, The Flash also has a controversial lead actor in Miller, whose string of 2022 arrests and legal issues tarnished the movie's reputation long before its release.
