Marvel"s Phase 5 Retcon Answers An 11-Year-Old Infinity Stone Mystery

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Loki season 2, episode 2, "Breaking Brad."
Summary
  • Loki finally reveals that he knew he had the Mind Stone in The Avengers, clearing up a long-standing MCU mystery.
  • Loki admits that he failed to use the Infinity Stones properly, acting on impulse and throwing Tony Stark out the window instead of utilizing the Mind Stone effectively.
  • Loki's emotional and rage-filled attack on New York City was not tactically planned, proving that his misuse of the Infinity Stones likely helped the original Avengers defeat him.
Marvel Studios' Loki season 2 finally answered an 11-year-old MCU mystery surrounding the Infinity Stones and Loki's role in The Avengers' Battle of New York. After debuting in 2011's Thor, Tom Hiddleston returned in The Avengers as the titular team's first villain, waging war on New York City with an army of alien Chitauri and Leviathan in an effort to get revenge on his brother Thor and father Odin. The current version of Loki in the MCU timeline escaped from the Avengers' clutches only moments after this battle, thanks to the Time Heist in Avengers: Endgame, so these events are fresh in his mind during his adventure with the Time Variance Authority.
A lot has happened to Loki since the Battle of New York, as Loki season 1 saw him exploring the TVA, coming face-to-face with his variants, and learning the truth about the multiverse from He Who Remains. Loki season 2 is continuing the God of Mischief's transformation into a hero in the MCU, despite his torturing of Hunter X-5, a.k.a. Brad Wolfe, but Loki season 2, episode 2, "Breaking Brad," saw him reflecting on his time as one of the MCU's original villains. Since the events of The Avengers and Endgame, only weeks have passed for Loki, but this has clearly been enough time for him to ponder his mistakes.
