Following the adventures of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and the USS Enterprise, Strange New Worlds has done a brilliant job of recasting classic Trek characters. Ethan Peck captures the essence of Spock while adding nuances to the Vulcan, and Paul Wesley embodies Lieutenant James T. Kirk without doing a William Shatner impression. While Lt. Spock is one of the main characters of Strange New Worlds and Kirk has become an important recurring character, Dr. McCoy has yet to make an appearance.
As with the casting of any major Star Trek legacy characters, fans have been speculating as to who should portray Dr. McCoy on Strange New Worlds. In the J.J. Abrams' Kelvin timeline Star Trek films, Karl Urban perfectly captures McCoy's prickly, but lovable personality, but he is the only actor to portray the character since DeForest Kelley in Star Trek: The Original Series. Karl Urban currently stars as Billy Butcher in Amazon Prime's The Boys, and the name of one of his costars has been tossed around as a potential contender to play Bones. Jensen Ackles, who starred as Dean Winchester for 15 seasons of Supernatural before portraying Soldier Boy in The Boys season 3, could be the perfect candidate to play Strange New Worlds' Dr. "Bones" McCoy.
