While many are hoping to see a new
Justice League movie in James Gunn"s DC Universe, the DC Studios co-CEO responds to a new rumor about the team"s supposed theatrical return. The DC Universe"s Chapter 1: "Gods and Monsters" is exactly one month away from kicking off, as Creature Commandos will be premiering its first episode on Max in December. However, while a more obscure team is about to get its time in the spotlight, part of the online world has been focused on the idea of a DCU Justice League movie.
As multiple DC Universe movies and TV shows have been announced, there have also been multiple rumored projects that have gained traction online over the last year.
One recent rumor stated that a Justice League movie was in the works at DC Studios, supposedly using Justice League: The New Frontier as source material. When a fan asked James Gunn on Threads if it was true that this Justice League reboot was happening - with Gunn supposedly writing and directing it - the DC Studios boss didn"t waste any time, as he gave the following response:
Nope sorry. No truth to this whatsoever.
What James Gunn's Justice League Comments May Mean For The DCU Close While Gunn"s Superman movie is on its way, and a Batman reboot is being worked on,
the concept of the Justice League getting a film this soon in the DC Universe doesn"t connect with what Gunn and Peter Safran have been saying about the direction of DC Studios. There are still plenty of Justice League members who don"t have their own proper solo project yet, including Wonder Woman. While the Paradise Lost show is in the works - which will be a Wonder Woman prequel - this is set to take place long before Diana was born.
Gunn has also made it clear that the films and series that have been revealed for Chapter 1: "Gods and Monsters" are only a part of it, as
they are not the complete slate for the first phase of the DC Universe and that there are more projects yet to be announced. To avoid the problems that came with the DCEU movie timeline, a Justice League film will likely happen when DC Studios has seen that the new DC Universe is off to a good start.
It"s key to take into account that Gunn has spoken very little about how the Justice League will be utilized in the DC Universe, which may speak for itself in how a movie for the team won"t be rushed. Indeed, it currently seems the focus is on other DC factions like the Green Lanterns and The Authority right now, fleshing out other corners of the franchise before looking at something like a Justice League release.
Our Take On James Gunn Debunking Justice League Movie Rumors
While this is likely to not be the last time James Gunn will address something like Justice League movie rumors, his comments do help to confirm his perspective on the DCU thus far once more. To even start thinking about a Justice League film before the DC Universe has kicked off would seem antithetical to many previous comments from Gunn and Safran, especially since so much about the franchise will remain unclear until Chapter 1: "Gods and Monsters" begins to build a foundation for things. For now, the world should not expect a
Justice League movie anytime soon.
