Deadpool"s Already Proved He Can Handle A Multiverse Story

With rumors around Deadpool 3 placing it as a multiversal, time-travel-related story, the character's prior appearances in Fox's universe have already proven this can be done well. Since 2016, Deadpool was part of Fox's X-Men universe, albeit only on the periphery. Since Disney's acquisition of Fox, many have been curious to see how an R-rated character like Deadpool would translate into the family-friendly MCU.
With Deadpool 3 confirmed to be coming to the MCU in Phase 6 - the third and final phase of the Multiverse Saga - the character's third outing is expected to deal with the multiverse. This was only bolstered by the return of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine who died in Logan, and the rumors of Owen Wilson's Mobius appearing in Deadpool 3, with the multiversal element of the MCU likely to permeate Deadpool's first appearance in the franchise. That being said, despite the big change in the story for Deadpool, the character has already proven that a multiversal, time-related story can truly work.
Deadpool 2 Already Used Time Travel & Alternate Timelines Deadpool 2 was a film that heavily featured elements of time travel and alternate timelines through the character of Cable. Given that the Multiverse Saga has been tied to time travel in some ways, especially through the TVA and the concept that alternate timelines spawn other universes, Deadpool as a character already has experiences with this type of story. The mid-credit sequence of Deadpool 2 showcases this.
In those mid-credit scenes, Deadpool travels back in time to multiple points, in a meta way of addressing Ryan Reynolds' superhero-related cinematic history. From killing the version of Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, to Reynolds himself as he reads the Green Lantern script, the meta humor also deals with creating alternate timelines and time travel elements. These scenes are often counted among the very best humor-related mid-credits sequences in superhero cinema, meaning a full movie of this kind of story would certainly be well-received.
Deadpool 3 Telling A Multiverse Story Builds On What Worked In Deadpool 2 Similarly, some of the other humor pulled from Deadpool 2 revolved around Wade breaking the fourth wall and referencing different universes. One scene includes Deadpool asking whether Professor X will be McAvoy or Stewart, an obvious reference to both actors who have portrayed different ages of Xavier's life. This, combined with the mid-credits scenes, already proves that Deadpool's humor works when referencing multiverses in humorous ways, in the fashion that only Deadpool can do.
If Deadpool 3 does indeed tell a multiverse story, it can only build on this. However, unlike Deadpool 2, Deadpool 3's story can contain hilarious universe-spanning jokes for a reason. If the TVA is confirmed for Deadpool 3, the door is left wide open for multiple jokes at the MCU's expense, as well as the countless other franchises like Fox's X-Men and Sony's Spider-Man universe that have since been made part of the MCU multiverse.
