Simon Kinberg, writer and producer on several of Fox's X-Men films, has offered Marvel Studios a piece of advice that could be valuable to the MCU's X-Men reboot. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige announced the development of an X-Men project in the MCU at SDCC 2019, and recent developments have spurred a new wave of excitement for the upcoming project. Although not many details are known about the upcoming project, mutant characters have started to be introduced to the MCU, and this is set to take a huge step forward when Fox's X-Men franchise is revisited in 2024's Deadpool 3.
Speaking to SlashFilm, Simon Kinberg, who wrote and produced X-Men projects between 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand and 2020's The New Mutants, offered Marvel Studios a valuable piece of advice. Kinberg stressed the importance of the vibrant and complex characters of Marvel's mutant storylines and noted that choosing the right characters for the MCU's X-Men would garner attention from the most talented actors. Marvel's X-Men-centric storylines comprise some of the most personal and relatable narratives, so picking the right X-Men characters to be recast with new actors in the MCU is of paramount importance.

If I had one piece of advice, honestly, it is a very cliché thing, but it just is true: The strength of the 'X-Men' is the characters. As much as there's great storytelling and great plot and incredible action sequences and all of those things are going to be required of the movies, as they are in the comics, what sets, for me, the 'X-Men' apart is that they are the richest collection of characters in any comic book ever... So it's really about the characters that will get you the best actors. Those actors will bring those characters to life in a whole new way that honestly I cannot wait to see. I really am such a fan of what Marvel does and I'm obviously a massive, massive fan of the 'X-Men.' Like the 'Star Wars' movies. I read two comics when I was growing up religiously. I read others, but the religious ones were for me, 'Batman' and 'X-Men.'

Following Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, Kevin Feige almost immediately teased the development of a mutant-centric project in the MCU, alongside one featuring the Fantastic Four. While Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four reboot went on to quickly receive an official release date, however, news on the MCU's highly-anticipated X-Men project has remained scarce. Even so, Marvel Studios has introduced several mutant characters in Phases 4 and 5, who could find themselves being recruited to the team, and Phase 5's upcoming Deadpool 3 will bring Deadpool and Wolverine into the MCU proper for the first time, along with a slew of other mutant heroes.
It was reported by Deadline in September 2023 that Marvel Studios would soon be hearing writers' pitches for the MCU's upcoming X-Men reboot. This was the first major development on the project since Feige's SDCC 2019 announcement, so is very exciting news for the future of the MCU. This report implies that the X-Men will be introduced to the MCU as a fully-formed team, rather than each member being set up individually beforehand. Although the X-Men reboot doesn't yet have a release date, there is speculation that the MCU's Phase 7 could be "The Mutants Saga", focusing primarily on developing the MCU's new X-Men and mutant characters.
