I"m Glad Deadpool & Wolverine Didn"t Bring Back Josh Brolin"s Cable

Josh Brolin"s Cable was notably absent from Deadpool & Wolverine but I"m glad Marvel decided not to bring him back. Deadpool & Wolverine had plenty of cameos from the Fox universe that gave audiences exactly what they wanted. Some were returning characters, like Chris Evans" Human Torch, Jennifer Garner"s Elektra, and Wesley Snipes" Blade. Others were characters who had never been fully realized, like Channing Tatum"s Gambit.
There were also appearances by characters from the Deadpool franchise, like Cyclops and Vanessa, but their roles were brief. One fan-favorite character missing from the film was Josh Brolin"s Cable from Deadpool 2. In an interview with Indiewire, Deadpool & Wolverine co-writer Paul Wernick said Cable "absolutely was considered" for the film, but ultimately didn"t make the cut. While it would have been nice to see Brolin reprise his X-Men role, Deadpool & Wolverine made the right decision to leave him out.
Deadpool & Wolverine's Cameos Are All About Redemption For Fox Characters Close Many argue that Deadpool & Wolverine is a cameo-fest made exclusively for fan service, but that"s not true. Every cameo is purposeful and fits into the film"s main narrative. Deadpool and the Wolverine variant featured in this film are two characters who are searching for purpose and redemption. Wade is still searching for meaning in his life and Logan is looking to redeem himself after failing to be a hero at the right moment.

Most of the returning Fox characters have similar goals and desires. Garner"s Elektra and Snipes" Blade never got the endings they deserved and believed fighting Cassandra Nova could give them the legacy they wanted. Tatum"s Gambit movie never happened, and this movie finally allowed him to make a name for himself. These returning characters did ignite excitement from the audience, but they aren"t meaningless and cheap cameos whose sole purpose is to get box office success.
Josh Brolin's Cable Already Got His Perfect Ending Close I loved Brolin"s performance as Cable in Deadpool 2 and wanted him to return to the Marvel universe in Deadpool & Wolverine. However, it"s for the best that he was left out because Cable"s return would have been distracting. As stated previously, the cameos in Deadpool 3 were all meant to redeem characters and actors who never got closure. Brolin"s Cable already got his perfect ending in Deadpool 2, so bringing him back would have been a moment of meaningless fan service.
I hope Brolin"s Cable returns someday, but in a project where his role will have more meaning.
Deadpool 2 ended with Wade preventing Russell from killing the headmaster and saving Cable"s future. While Cable doesn"t return home, he knows his family is safe and that"s all he cares about. He didn"t need to return for Deadpool & Wolverine as his story is already complete. He fulfilled his purpose and doesn"t need to be redeemed with another film. I hope Brolin"s Cable returns someday, but in a project where his role will have more meaning.
