Shawn Levy, director of Marvel Studios' upcoming Deadpool 3, has revealed that the MCU film might not make its May 3, 2024, release date. Ryan Reynolds was confirmed to be reprising his role of Wade Wilson, a.k.a. Deadpool, following Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019. Reynolds will be joined by several returning Fox characters in Deadpool 3, including Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. Deadpool 3's production was paused with the beginning of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in early 2023. While the WGA have since ended their strike, the SAG-AFTRA strike shows little sign of ending soon, so Shawn Levy is losing confidence that Deadpool 3 will release when planned.
During a recent interview with The Wrap, promoting his upcoming Netflix series All the Light We Cannot See, Shawn Levy noted that Deadpool 3's May 3, 2024, release date is in jeopardy. Noting that "the actors' strike and the long pause in production has put that release date in true risk," Levy also lamented, "I don't even know if we officially have [a release date]." Deadpool 3 was originally expected to release in November 2024, but was brought forward amid other delays in Marvel Studios' production schedule. Even so, this new development suggests there may be even more delays plaguing the MCU's Phase 5.

While the Writers Guild of America strike, which ran between May 2 and September 27, 2023, had an impact on many projects' productions, it was the Screen Actors Guild strike that brought Hollywood to a halt, and forced productions on many developing projects to be paused. SAG-AFTRA voted to strike on July 14, 2023, and as of October 17, 2023, no progress has been made in negotiation talks with the AMPTP. This has had a serious impact on many projects in the MCU that were part-way through production, both feature films and TV shows being developed for Disney+, not only Shawn Levy's Deadpool 3.
Less than half of Charlie Cox's solo Disney+ series had been filmed prior to the strikes, yet the pause in production allowed Marvel Studios executives to evaluate the show so far and begin a massive creative overhaul of Daredevil: Born Again. Production has also been paused on Wonder Man, the Yahya Abdul-Mateen II-led series that hasn't yet been given a release date, Marvel Studios' Blade reboot, and 2024's Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts. The MCU's planned films for 2024 will likely all be delayed if Deadpool 3 is, which could have a domino effect to push back the conclusion of the MCU's Multiverse Saga itself.
