The MCU Answers Captain Marvel"s Cliffhanger Ending Mystery 4 Years Later

Summary
  • Captain Marvel's ending included a cliffhanger.
  • The Marvels' new trailer shows Captain Marvel destroying the Kree Supreme Intelligence.
  • The scene pays off Carol Danvers' promise to Jude Law's Yon-Rogg.
Captain Marvel's ending mystery has finally been unveiled. Carol Danvers' Marvel Cinematic Universe journey started with Captain Marvel, which concluded with a cliffhanger. After Captain Marvel's ending saw Carol spare Jude Law's Yon-Rogg and send him back home with a message that she was going after the Supreme Intelligence, the MCU never showed what happened between Captain Marvel and the Kree leader. However, that has now changed.
On Twitter, the official Marvel account posted a new The Marvels trailer that shows Captain Marvel destroying the Kree Supreme Intelligence.
A previous synopsis for the Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels, revealed that Carol has "taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence." Now, with the new trailer for the film, the scene itself where Carol destroys the Supreme Intelligence appears to have been revealed, with The Marvels' story possibly including the flashback to explain where Carol has been.
Why Captain Marvel's Supreme Intelligence Ending Is Appearing 4 Years After The Film The decision to never show Captain Marvel killing a comic book-accurate Supreme Intelligence in Captain Marvel's ending has been explained by Marvel Studios production designer Andy Nicholson. Speaking with ComicBook.com around the release of Captain Marvel, Nicholson explained why the scene was not part of the film, saying, "I think eventually for the final scene of the movie, it would've taken away from what was the core focus which was, it would've been a big spectacle which would've overwhelmed the main thrust of what we were doing which was talking about Carol's development and transformation into Captain Marvel." Now, the MCU's final 2023 movie brings the scene back.
While the Supreme Intelligence scene did not fit with what Captain Marvel was trying to accomplish, it makes sense for the scene to be brought back for The Marvels. Captain Marvel has been largely absent from the MCU, with only Avengers movie appearances around the debut of her solo film and cameos to her name since then. With The Marvels touching on what Carol had been doing in space after Captain Marvel, as Monica Rambeau will be sure to demand some explanations for why Carol was not there when she was growing up, the Supreme Intelligence scene coming back is necessary.
The MCU has also recently released the first solo project to focus on Nick Fury, who was a major player in Captain Marvel. Disney+'s Secret Invasion focused on Fury and Captain Marvel's failure to find the Skrulls a new home after years, which led a Skrull named Gravik to stage an invasion on Earth. While Fury dealt with his past head-on in the series, Carol was nowhere to be seen. The Marvels including flashbacks to Carol's space journey, such as the Supreme Intelligence scene, helps explain why she abandoned the Skrulls, as the greatest threat to them was extinguished in the missing Captain Marvel scene.
