Deadpool & Wolverine Copied Guardians Of The Galaxy’s Opening Scene Trick 10 Years Later (& Made It Better)

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine.
Summary
  • Deadpool & Wolverine copied Guardians of the Galaxy's dance sequence, but made it even more entertaining.
  • Deadpool & Wolverine introduced Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool to the MCU in style by having him dance to the tune of NSYNC's "Bye Bye Bye."
  • Deadpool's dance sequence in the opening credits of the film surpassed Guardians of the Galaxy's iconic scene in execution and impact.
The opening sequence of Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine copied the best trick from 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, but made it even more entertaining. Deadpool & Wolverine introduced Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine to the MCU in style, with an expansive storyline that addressed the history of both 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise and the MCU itself. This included toying with Wolverine's emotional death at the end of 2017's Logan - something Reynolds previously promised not to do.
Hugh Jackman portrayed a very different version of Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine, with his original version from Fox's X-Men timeline remaining deceased after his battle against X-24 in Logan. After learning of Wolverine's status as Earth-10005's Anchor Being, however, Deadpool exhumed his body, hoping that his healing ability would have brought him back, allowing him to convince the Time Variance Authority to save his universe. He was soon proved wrong, but Wolverine's adamantium skeleton came in handy when the TVA caught up to the Merc with a Mouth.

Deadpool & Wolverine & Guardians Of The Galaxy Both Opened With A Dance Sequence Close Deadpool took on the TVA's Minute Men in Deadpool & Wolverine's opening moments, using Wolverine's adamantium-laced bones as weapons to take down the entire troop. This brutal sequence formed the opening credit scene for Deadpool & Wolverine. Set to the tune of NSYNC's 2000 hit "Bye Bye Bye," Deadpool's violent attack was spliced with scenes of the Merc with a Mouth dancing hilariously. This copied 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, as the opening credit sequence of James Gunn's MCU debut also featured a dance montage.
Ten years ago, Chris Pratt's Peter Quill burst onto Morag to claim the Power Stone while dancing to the tune of Redbone's "Come and Get Your Love" from 1973. Both of these sequences in Guardians of the Galaxy and Deadpool & Wolverine marked strong debuts for these respective characters in the MCU, and have become two of the franchise's most beloved and viral moments. However, while Guardians of the Galaxy's opening dance scene was fantastic, Deadpool & Wolverine managed to pull it off much better.

What Made Deadpool & Wolverine’s Dance Sequence Better Than Guardians Of The Galaxy’s? Guardians of the Galaxy opening credit sequence is one of the MCU's most memorable scenes, immediately giving us insight into Peter Quill's fun-loving and goofy personality. However, Deadpool & Wolverine took this to the extreme, as Deadpool pulled off the exact dance moves that NSYNC used in performances of "Bye Bye Bye." Deadpool & Wolverine's dance scene was far stronger, as professional dancer Nick Pauley donned the Deadpool suit to break it down to "Bye Bye Bye."
Hiring a professional dancer to pull off these moves in Deadpool & Wolverine was a fantastic choice, as it made this sequence much cleaner and more impactful than Chris Pratt's unchoreographed grooving to "Come and Get Your Love" in Guardians of the Galaxy. Pratt's Star-Lord seemed to just move to the music at will, but Deadpool's embrace of the real dance moves was far more entertaining. While Nick Pauley was in the suit, you can imagine Deadpool himself knowing all the moves to "Bye Bye Bye," so this truly set the mood for the rest of the Phase 5 movie.
Deadpool & Wolverine R Action Sci-FiComedySuperhero A follow-up to the highly successful Deadpool and Deadpool 2 films starring Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth. The third film will be the first in the franchise to be developed under the Marvel Studios banner following Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox.
