Deadpool & Wolverine Made 8 Of My Biggest Marvel Movie Dreams Come True

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine.
Summary
  • Deadpool & Wolverine fulfilled 8 major Marvel movie dreams in just over 2 hours, closing the Fox era while introducing Deadpool into the MCU.
  • The film expertly balanced a plethora of cameos without overwhelming the story.
  • Bringing in the lesser-known Cassandra Nova as the villain added depth to the movie, while the incorporation of the Deadpool Corps was a great nod to the comics.
Deadpool & Wolverine managed to make eight of my biggest Marvel movie dreams a reality within the span of one just over two-hour film. As the ending of the Deadpool trilogy, a farewell of sorts to the Fox Marvel era and the iconic releases that came with it, and a celebration of Reynolds' character now being a formal part of the Multiverse Saga chapter of the MCU timeline, Deadpool & Wolverine had a lot to pull off in not a huge runtime. With audience expectations high, there was a certain level of nervous trepidation before the film's release based on how much it had to get right.
Add to this the huge number of teased Deadpool & Wolverine cameos, the further fleshing out of the MCU multiverse, and explaining how Hugh Jackman can return as Wolverine after Logan, and it seemed almost too much was being put on the movie's plate. Mercifully, though, Deadpool & Wolverine manages to balance its buffet of offerings with grace and only a few jokes that may go over the heads of those who aren't aware of Marvel's movie history. As a result, it also brings in a huge selection of dream moments for a fan like myself.

2 Deadpool & Wolverine's Cameos Made 5 Almost Impossible Marvel Movie Hopes Reality Deadpool & Wolverine's Cameos Made Some Impossible Dreams Part Of Real Life Close Deadpool & Wolverine's cameos essentially managed to comprise a list of return appearances - or outright debuts - that couldn't have worked in the same way were they to have happened in any other movie, due to both the unique tone and unique universe placement of the former Fox series. Laura was perhaps the most logical in terms of cameos, but it seemed for a good while that the movie would try and stay as separate as possible from Logan, which made X-23's appearance feel tenuous prior to the announcement Dafne Keen would be returning in the role.
Jennifer Garner's appearance as Elektra was also teased before Deadpool & Wolverine's release, which was something of a welcome relief as someone who loves the character and was sad about her solo movie cementing an awkward reputation for her that deserved to be amended if possible. On a similar note, with the MCU Blade impending, I thought the chances of Wesley Snipes appearing in the franchise were at an all time low short of a brief glimpse in the story of Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars, which felt like a miserable reality right up until he appeared alongside Garner.
That said, perhaps the two most exciting cameos were actors who hadn't appeared in Marvel movies prior, even though we all very much hoped they would. I grew up hearing about the long-lasting but seemingly permanently crushed hopes regarding Channing Tatum's Gambit, and almost anyone who has heard of Henry Cavill has read at least one really convincing argument for why he'd be a perfect fit for Marvel's own cinematic universe - so getting these two appear within hours of one another in the movie really did feel like something special.
Deadpool & Wolverine's Story Brought In My Favorite Underrated Comic Villain Cassandra Nova Was The Perfect Villain For Deadpool & Wolverine Image via Marvel Entertainment While most of Deadpool & Wolverine's big appearances were characters that film audiences should already be familiar with, the decision to make the main villain of the movie a less well-known figure - that of Cassandra Nova - was not only a great way to balance things, but also to introduce an underrated character who is often overlooked when it comes to adaptations. Cassandra has obvious ties to the greater Marvel world due to her familial relation to Professor X, has a fascinating story that can be taken in a range of directions, and has powers that make her an enormous threat.
However, none of this is the most exciting part about introducing Cassandra Nova into the MCU. Instead, the most exciting part is that she's almost always shown with a kind of flare that makes her doing things like using her powers to place her hand physically inside someone's head instead of just restraining them in a more straightforward way par for the course. Combine all this with Emma Corrin's acting talents, and the villain is easily one of the highlights of the movie, even with such a range of other major characters also sharing the spotlight.
I Never Thought The Deadpool Corps Would Appear On-Screen The Deadpool Corps Are A Great Part Of The Antihero's Comic Lore Having grown up on Deadpool comics, the idea of bringing the Deadpool Corps to the big screen was one of those ideas that felt incredibly promising, but also extremely unlikely. The storylines the Corps are in tend to be even more amped up in terms of chaos and violence than solo Deadpool's usual comic fare, and requires the narrative to balance the wisecracking of several versions of Deadpool, which is a trial that's even more challenging for a movie to pull off right.
As such, Deadpool & Wolverine managing to bring the Corps in with true style also checked another box off the list of things I didn't think would be possible to see in cinemas, let alone in the MCU. The huge roster of the Corps engaging in an immense fight towards the end of the film meant that, though they didn't get a focal feature, they certainly got to show off what makes them a unique faction, even without a huge amount of screentime.
Deadpool & Wolverine's Biggest Highlight Is Still Bringing The Antihero Into The MCU Deadpool Entering The MCU Without Having To Stay In Earth-616 Looks Like The Right Move For The Franchise Close While the various cameos, character debuts, and references in Deadpool & Wolverine are sure to bring audiences joy for years to come, the movie's biggest feat is still managing to find a way to get Deadpool himself into the MCU without making things feel forced. Had Wade Wilson simply hopped over to Earth-616 for a permanent stay and left everything he knew behind, his folding into the MCU could've risked feeling more obligatory than celebratory.
Instead, Deadpool & Wolverine keeping elements of the status quo - and having the Fox Marvel universe seemingly live on in some form rather than being killed off to cement the already well-established MCU - works to provide a less brutal way to bring Ryan Reynolds' Marvel movie star into the cinematic universe's multiverse. This also works to keep the focus on Deadpool in his own movie and series, and ensure that the final chapter of the trilogy still celebrates the antihero and what makes him unique, even as the greater landscape changes around him.
Deadpool & Wolverine A follow-up to the highly successful Deadpool and Deadpool 2 films starring Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth. The third film will be the first in the franchise to be developed under the Marvel Studios banner following Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox.
