One scene in the MCU"s second phase depicts Nick Fury at his very best. Having served as the director of SHIELD before its fall, Samuel L. Jackson"s Fury has been a part of the MCU since its very beginnings in 2008"s Iron Man. However, none of his previous or subsequent appearances have ever topped this one sequence from 2014"s Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it"s revealed that the terrorist organization known as Hydra had long been embedded within every level of SHIELD. To that end, Nick Fury is one of the first to suspect their existence within SHIELD, resulting in Hydra sending the Winter Soldier to eliminate him. As such, the assassination attempt on Nick Fury in 2014"s Captain America: The Winter is one of the master spy"s very best moments in the MCU (and Jackson himself agrees).
The MCU Never Got Much Chance To Show Off Nick Fury At His Best The Winter Soldier Assassination Scene Was Fury's Peak In the MCU, Nick Fury is an elder-statesman leader, the man who first assembled the Avengers. As such, this means that Jackson has received too few chances to show off his action movie lead credentials across his multiple appearances. Even when Fury was the primary lead in 2023"s Secret Invasion, Marvel Studios largely fumbled in more ways than one such as giving the finale a CGI action sequence that Fury was barely even involved in.

2 However, The Winter Soldier was where Jackson"s Fury truly got to shine in the MCU. Attacked on all sides in a coordinated strike while driving his car in Washington D.C., Fury had no choice but to act quickly and use the tools at his disposal to survive. This includes using his car"s impressive countermeasures such as a mounted turret and automatic steering. While his car was eventually totaled by the Winter Soldier"s arrival and a disc grenade magnetizing to the underside of his vehicle, Fury still manages to evade execution by escaping into the sewers via a handheld tunnel-boring laser device.
Samuel L Jackson Says The Winter Soldier's Car Attack Scene Is Fury's Best "That's Like Quintessential Nick Fury" Close The entire action sequence in The Winter Soldier is Nick Fury at his finest, using his experience, quick reflexes, and a variety of impressive gadgets to get out of what was meant to be an inescapable trap. To that end, Samuel Jackson recently confirmed in an interview with GQ that the scene is his favorite Nick Fury moment in the entire MCU (comments start at 17:14):
It"s also fun to hear Jackson talking about how he wants Fury to visit Wakanda and how he wanted the former SHIELD director to be in Captain America: Civil War to "make everyone go to their rooms". However, the fact that the car scene in Winter Soldier is Jackson"s favorite Nick Fury moment is both a testament to the quality of the second Captain America movie, while arguably being an indictment on Marvel Studios for underutilizing all that Nick Fury could be in the years since (especially considering his controversial and largely lackluster MCU show).
