Summary
  • After The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's Blu-ray release, speculation has been rising that a potential season 2 could be developed.
  • The Falcon and the Winter Soldier season 2 would focus on Joaquín Torres' new Falcon, rather than Sam Wilson, who is now Captain America.
  • Joaquín Torres' Falcon will make his next appearance in Captain America: Brave New World, perhaps being set up for a bright MCU future.
Marvel Studios may have teased a potential The Falcon and the Winter Soldier season 2, but the continuation of the Anthony Mackie-led Phase 4 series wouldn't focus on Sam Wilson's version of the winged MCU superhero. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premiered on Disney+ on March 19, 2021, bringing Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson and Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes into the MCU's Phase 4 after 2019's Avengers: Endgame and Steve Rogers' retirement. Despite being a popular addition to one of the MCU's most divisive chapters, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier season 2 doesn't currently appear to be in development.
Instead of a second season, Sam Wilson's journey as the MCU's new Captain America will continue in Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World, while Bucky Barnes' Winter Soldier will return in 2025's Thunderbolts. Despite the development of Brave New World, speculation has been rising about the potential for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier season 2, as the "Complete First Season" is releasing on 4k UHD and Blu-ray. Miniseries' like WandaVision released as the "Complete Series," so it's possible that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier season 2 could happen, but not with Sam Wilson as the titular hero.

Given the first season's ending, Sam will need a new villain to face off against. Joaquín Torres Became The MCU’s New Falcon In Phase 4 The Falcon and the Winter Soldier focused on Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson, who was still operating as the Falcon, despite being gifted the Captain America shield and mantle by Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame. The Phase 4 series explored Wilson's evolution into the star-spangled man-with-a-plan, leaning heavily on his hesitation to represent the United States as a Black man. However, Wilson finally embraced his new role in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's finale, creating the opportunity for a new character to assume the heroic role of the Falcon in the MCU's future, and this responsibility fell on Joaquín Torres.
The Gifted and Top Gun: Maverick's Danny Ramirez debuted in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as United States Air Force Lieutenant Joaquín Torres. Torres works alongside Sam Wilson to investigate Karli Morgenthau and the Flag Smashers, and in the penultimate episode of the series, Torres is gifted the EXO-7 Falcon wing-suit by Sam Wilson once the latter decides to become Captain America. While Joaquín Torres wasn't shown operating as the Falcon in the MCU's Phase 4, Ramirez is returning in Captain America: Brave New World, which will see him don the wing-suit and officially become the MCU's new Falcon.

Joaquín Torres
Joaquín Torres’ Marvel Comics Origins & MCU Differences Explained Close Joaquín Torres made his first appearance in Marvel Comics' All New, All Different Marvel reboot in the wake of 2015's Secret Wars event. Debuting in Captain America: Sam Wilson #3, Joaquín Torres was taken captive by the Sons of the Serpent, who kidnapped illegal immigrants on the American border and sent them to Dr. Karl Malus to use as test subjects in his experiments. Malus spliced Torres' DNA with that of Sam Wilson's bird companion, Redwing, partially and irreversibly transforming his arms into wings, though this process also gifted Torres a regenerative healing factor and a psychic link to Redwing.
Joaquín Torres became Captain America's sidekick, Marvel Comics' new Falcon, though with biological wings instead of Sam Wilson's former wing-suit.
Following Malus' defeat, Sam Wilson took Joaquín Torres under his wing - so to speak - and the young hero proved pivotal in helping Captain America defeat the Serpent Society, a team of snake-themed supervillains. After battling the Serpent Society together, Joaquín Torres became Captain America's sidekick, Marvel Comics' new Falcon, though with biological wings instead of Sam Wilson's former wing-suit. Joaquín Torres' evolution into the MCU's Falcon is notably different, as he has simply been gifted Sam Wilson's former wing-suit, rather than undergoing any physical transformation, though he will still become the Falcon in Captain America: Brave New World.
Joaquín Torres’ Falcon Is Returning In Captain America 4 Shortly after the successful release of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in 2021, Marvel Studios confirmed that the series' writers Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson would be returning to pen the script for Captain America: Brave New World - then titled New World Order. Julius Onah joined the project as director in July 2022, while several cast members from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier were also confirmed to be reprising their roles. This includes Carl Lumbly, who debuted as super soldier Isaiah Bradley in Phase 4, and Danny Ramirez, who will take up the mantle of the Falcon.
Related Captain America: Brave New World Cast & Marvel Character Guide Sam Wilson's big-screen debut as the MCU's Captain America will bring back several familiar faces, while also introducing new and exciting characters. Details of Captain America: Brave New World's storyline are being kept under wraps, though there has been speculation that the Serpent Society, and potentially the Red Hulk, could appear. While Captain America: Brave New World will mark Danny Ramirez's next appearance as Joaquín Torres' Falcon, rumors of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier season 2 tease an even more central role for him in the MCU's future. The series still being titled The Falcon and the Winter Soldier suggests Torres' Falcon will be the focus, as Sam Wilson has left this position, but there is one flaw in this concept.
Captain America: Brave New World FantasyAdventureAction
Release Date February 14, 2025 Studio(s) Marvel Studios Cast Anthony Mackie Why Joaquin Torres Probably Won’t Team Up With The Winter Soldier In The MCU If The Falcon and the Winter Soldier season 2 is put into development, it's possible the title will be changed, as Joaquín Torres has no prior relationship with Bucky Barnes' Winter Soldier. It's very unlikely that Torres will team up with Barnes in the MCU's future, especially since Sebastian Stan is making his next appearance as a member of Marvel Studios' first Thunderbolts team. Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes' friendship began during Captain America: Civil War, and their connections to Steve Rogers' Captain America meant it was natural for them to come together in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
It's also possible that a new Winter Soldier could emerge, as Civil War proved that several attempts had been made at creating the super soldiers.
This isn't the case for Joaquín Torres, so it wouldn't make sense for Bucky Barnes to appear in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier season 2. Instead, it's possible that Torres' Falcon could team up with someone else, perhaps Riri Williams' Ironheart, as these heroes form a bond in Marvel Comics by joining the Champions. It's also possible that a new Winter Soldier could emerge, as Civil War proved that several attempts had been made at creating the super soldiers. Before any official update, however, Captain America: Brave New World will uncover more about Joaquín Torres' future as the Falcon.
Captain America: Brave New World is scheduled for release on February 14, 2025, as part of the MCU's Phase 5.
