Almost 15 months after it was first announced, DCU supremo James Gunn has kicked off fresh DC fan excitement for the upcoming Green Lantern project with coordinated posts across his social accounts. So far, little has been revealed about Max series
Lanterns, beyond what Gunn revealed in January 2023, but his latest tease - which comes as Superman is already actively in production - could point to more imminent news.
The first DCU movie will, of course, include a Green Lantern, with Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner joining Superman's ensemble cast. That fits with Gunn's plans to make the DCU feel already lived-in when it arrives, with established and active superheroes. The initial announcement of Lanterns positioned it as a mystery show, starring arguably the two most popular iterations of Green Lantern:
“We call it Lanterns and it is starring two of our favorite Green Lanterns — Hal Jordan and John Stewart. t’s going to be with HBO Max, as all of our series are that we’re going to talk about today. It is more of a True Detective–type mystery with our two Lanterns. A terrestrial-based mystery –“
Gunn has just shared an image of a Green Lantern's first pointed skyward, covered in blood and firing an energy blast out of the power ring. Neither his posts on Threads or Instagram came with a caption, but naturally sparked a lot of speculation and hype. Could it be that Gunn is about to announce Lanterns as the next upcoming DCU project to enter active production? Let's hope so.
