X-Men ‘97 Creator’s Multiverse Idea Would Improve Marvel’s Future Plans 2 Separate Ways

Summary
  • X-Men '97 writer Beau DeMayo proposes the idea that the show exists in a different Marvel multiverse than the MCU's live-action universes.
  • Having two separate multiverses, one for animated and one for live-action, would give Marvel more creative freedom over both of them and would prevent future confusions.
  • Other animated Marvel shows and movies like The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes and Big Hero 6 could coexist in Marvel's animated multiverse alongside X-Men '97.
X-Men '97 creator Beau DeMayo's parallel multiverse idea could help Marvel's animated and live-action releases to coexist. As X-Men '97 heads to its season finale, the show's universe continues to expand. Mutants' conflict with humans has reached worldwide proportions, and several other Marvel icons have taken notice. However, Earth isn't the limit for X-Men '97. Not even the Shi'ar Empire marks the limit for Marvel's animated shows. In fact, X-Men '97 could signal the rise of an entire Marvel animated multiverse.
Following X-Men '97 episode 8's release, writer Beau DeMayo took to X to discuss the show. DeMayo responded to a fan's question regarding X-Men '97's place in the MCU multiverse. According to the writer, he personally considers X-Men '97 to take place in a different multiverse "tree" than Loki's new Sacred Timeline in the MCU. Instead of another branch flowing parallel to live-action universes like the MCU's Earth-616 and Earth-838, X-Men '97 would belong to a different tree altogether. Read Beau DeMayo's post below:
A Distinct Marvel Animated Multiverse Is Beneficial For Every Marvel Release Two Separate Multiverses Could Help Marvel's Animated And Live-Action Franchises Custom Image by Kai Young While an all-encompassing multiverse that includes every live-action and animated title ever released by Marvel would be an impressive achievement, having two distinct Marvel multiverses could be more practical. Separating Marvel's animated multiverse from Marvel's live-action multiverse would allow both to have creative freedom over their respective characters and properties. For instance, if Avengers: Secret Wars affects Marvel's every live-action universe, every animated movie and show's universe can remain unaffected. Otherwise, Avengers: Secret Wars would have to incorporate Marvel's animated universes into its plot, or at least acknowledge them.

What Other Shows Marvel’s Animated Multiverse Could Include Marvel's Animated Multiverse Could Bring Together Popular Movies And Shows Close As shown by X-Men '97's Marvel cameos, characters such as Captain America, Spider-Man, Doctor Doom, and Hulk live in the same universe as the X-Men. But apart from X-Men '97's expansive universe, there are many other animated Marvel shows and movies that could exist parallel to it. For instance, the recently canceled Hulu shows MODOK and Hit Monkey could be somewhere out there in Marvel's multiversal tree alongside older hits like X-Men: Evolution, Big Hero 6, The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and Wolverine and the X-Men.
Due to their similar art style, The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes and Wolverine and the X-Men are generally considered to take place in the same universe.
A distinct difference between Marvel's live-action and animated multiverses would keep them from merging together in unintended ways. However, an eventual crossover between them could be possible thanks to Sony's Spider-Verse movies. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse confirmed that Spider-People from all kinds of animated shows, live-action movies, and even videogames gather together in the Spider-Society's headquarters. Similarly, Marvel's animated and live-action multiverses could eventually find a way to contact each other, as X-Men '97 writer Beau DeMayo suggests.
