Sebastian Stan Provides Major Update For Thunderbolts Filming

Summary
  • Sebastian Stan confirms that filming for Marvel's Thunderbolts will begin in "a month or so."
  • The Thunderbolts project boasts a strong cast of returning antiheroes and reformed villains from throughout the MCU's history.
  • Sebastian Stan's character, Bucky Barnes, is likely to assume a leadership role in the Thunderbolts team, following in the footsteps of Steve Rogers' Captain America.
During a recent interview, MCU star Sebastian Stan has provided a major update regarding the production schedule of Marvel Studios' upcoming Thunderbolts project. Sebastian Stan debuted as James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes in 2011's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and since became a consistent and long-lasting supporting character to Chris Evans' Captain America. As the superhuman Winter Soldier, Barnes helped the Avengers battle the Mad Titan Thanos, aided Sam Wilson with his transition into the new Captain America, and will soon become a prominent member of Marvel Studios' first Thunderbolts team line-up, which is set to form in MCU's Phase 6.
Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige officially announced the development of a Thunderbolts project in July 2022, and revealed the project's cast two months later, including Sebastian Stan returning as Bucky Barnes' Winter Soldier. With Beef's Jake Schreier directing, Thunderbolts is set to begin filming very soon, which has now been confirmed by Sebastian Stan during an interview with Variety promoting Aaron Schimberg's upcoming A24 movie A Different Man. As well as noting that Robert Downey Jr. likely won't return as Tony Stark as "he's doing fine," Sebastian Stan revealed that Thunderbolts is set to begin filming in "a month or so."
I'm excited. I'm gonna go back basically in a month or so, and I've missed it. With Thunderbolts, yeah, and it's gonna be a great cast. You know, their batting average is so high and it's just so difficult to always, you know, land everything in the right way, but it's always been a great experience, and I think with this one, particularly because of Jake Schreier, who did Beef, and everyone else that was all involved there has come on board so I think there's a lot of good things.
Related MCU's Changed Phase 6 Timeline Makes A Major Fantastic Four & Thunderbolts Theory Way More Likely Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts projects could connect directly thanks to one rumored character and a new Phase 6 release schedule. What Will Bucky Barnes’ Role Be In The Thunderbolts Team? Close Sebastian Stan was confirmed to be involved with the MCU's Thunderbolts project in September 2022, along with Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Olga Kurylenko and Julia Louis Dreyfus. The Thunderbolts team, that first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1997's The Incredible Hulk (Vol. 2) #449, usually comprises reformed villains and antiheroes, so Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes fits the bill perfectly. For most of his early MCU career, Barnes operated as the HYDRA-controlled Winter Soldier, though has since redeemed himself after breaking free from his conditioning and fighting alongside Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
While not much is known about the details of Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts, it's possible that Barnes could assume a role similar to that of Steve Rogers' Captain America in the MCU's original Avengers team. Barnes' Winter Soldier could be seen as the team's de facto leader, especially since he has the most life experience, the longest superhuman career, and perhaps the most connections with important figures and helpful allies across the globe. While Julia Louis-Dreyfus' Valentina may have nefarious purposes for the team, however, Thunderbolts will likely see Bucky Barnes assume control of the team to fight for good instead.
