Maguire & Garfield’s Spider-Man Returns Just Got Way More Likely

Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's returns look even more likely thanks to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The first two live-action Spider-Man movie actors made their triumphant returns as their versions of Peter Parker in 2022 thanks to the multiverse. Spider-Man: No Way Home's story saw the multiverse break, allowing Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to play Spider-Man again opposite Tom Holland in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The rapturous response to the Phase 4 movie only increased the desire from audiences to see the former Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man franchise stars return again.
Despite Spider-Man: No Way Home's massive success, Sony has not announced any future plans for Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man returns. This has not stopped campaigns from continuing about Maguire's Spider-Man 4 happening or Garfield returning to star in The Amazing Spider-Man 3. There is also plenty of speculation that both will be seen again in Avengers: Secret Wars. The former franchise leads might not have to wait until 2026 to play Spider-Man again, as the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailer teases both coming back as part of the animated movie.
Across The Spider-Verse Trailer Sets Up Maguire & Garfield's Spider-Man Returns There are two different points in the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailer that set up Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's returns. The biggest example comes from the international version of the trailer, which opens with dialogue from all three live-action Spider-Man actors and their respective franchises. With reports previously suggesting that Tom Holland does cameo in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, using Maguire and Garfield's voices in the new trailer could be a sign that they will factor into the animated movie's massive multiverse story. The official trailer also includes a reference to Spider-Man: No Way Home's events by mentioning Doctor Strange and Spider-Man from Earth-19999.
Since Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man returns happened in Spider-Man: No Way Home, references to the film in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse could help connect the two films. The sequel's marketing has shown the abundance of Spider-Man variants who will appear as part of Miles Morales' next movie. Seeing as how Sony is already making sure to include references to live-action Spider-Men, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse featuring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's returns is even more likely now.
Across The Spider-Verse Has To Get Maguire & Garfield's Cameos Right The excitement that comes with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man returns in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse also brings a certain amount of pressure for Sony to do it the right way. Cameos from the live-action Spider-Man stars, including a Tom Holland cameo, will need to strike the right balance between being more than fan service but not overshadowing Miles' story. The good news is that Sony already proved they can pull this off with Spider-Man: No Way Home, which brought Maguire and Garfield back but in support of Holland's Spider-Man's story.
Since it looks like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse deals with Miles rejecting the idea of leaving his family behind to protect the multiverse with Spider-Man 2099's Spidey team, Maguire, Garfield, and Holland's Spider-Men could appear to aid Miles in his journey. Depending on how the cameos are pulled off, audiences could see animated versions of the live-action Spider-Men, an animated Miles visit a live-action world, or let Shameik Moore play live-action Miles Morales for the first time. Whatever the case may be, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse needs to make sure that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's returns lift up Miles, not take attention away from him.
