Recent rumors have sparked speculation that
Avengers: Secret Wars will be soft-rebooting the MCU, but there are many niggling cliffhangers that Marvel Studios needs to address before this can happen. Over the last decade-and-a-half, Marvel Studios has developed the most expansive, popular, and profitable superhero movie franchise in history, spanning over forty projects across film, TV, and animation. The MCU has told an ever-expanding story since 2008's Iron Man, but recent speculation suggests that Marvel Studios may be planning a reset of their shared universe, establishing a new continuity for the MCU following the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga in 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars.
Although nothing has yet been confirmed by Marvel Studios themselves, rumors imply that Avengers: Secret Wars will culminate in a reboot of the MCU. This could allow old characters like Iron Man and Black Widow to return, new heroes such as the Fantastic Four and the X-Men to be better established, and fresh stories to unfold, while gifting new audiences an easy route into the MCU, without them having to have seen the franchise's massive back catalog. While this is an exciting prospect for the franchise, there are still several loose ends and cliffhangers from the MCU's current timeline that must see resolution before Marvel Studios can reboot the MCU.

Phase 4's Spider-Man: No Way Home marked the end of Tom Holland's first MCU trilogy as Peter Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Man. As well as concluding the first part of Spider-Man's story, No Way Home also teased huge storylines for the MCU's future. Among them was the appearance of Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock in No Way Home's post-credits scene, an iconic Spider-Man villain who debuted in Sony's Spider-Man Universe. While Hardy's Eddie Brock was dragged back to his reality following Doctor Strange's spell, a piece of the Venom symbiote was left in the MCU. This perhaps teased Spider-Man's bonding with Venom in the MCU's future, but this hasn't yet been seen.
9 Where Did White Vision Go After WandaVision?
2021's WandaVision kicked off Phase 4 and the MCU's Multiverse Saga in the wake of Vision's death at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Wanda Maximoff's grief saw her create a sitcom-style world in WandaVision and also create a fabricated version of her lost love. Throughout the series, it was revealed that SWORD had rebuilt the original Vision, now with a sleeker, white design, who was tasked with bringing down the Scarlet Witch. Once Vision had restored White Vision's memories, however, the latter disappeared and hasn't been heard from since, though Marvel Studios' proposed Vision Quest spinoff is expected to reveal more about where he might have gone.
8 Will Dane Whitman Become The Black Knight?
Kit Harrington debuted as Dane Whitman in Phase 4's Eternals, adapted from Marvel Comics' Black Knight, a superhero who wields the cursed Ebony Blade. Whitman's future as the Black Knight was teased in Eternals' post-credits scene, which also featured the first voice appearance of Mahershala Ali's Blade. However, while it was previously thought that Harrington would return as Whitman in Marvel Studios' Blade reboot, this casting has since been shrouded in doubt amid major reported rewrites of Blade's script. This means it's unclear when Dane Whitman might return to the MCU and whether he will eventually become the MCU's Black Knight.
7 What Does Doctor Strange's Third Eye Mean?
2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was crucial in expanding on the MCU's Multiverse Saga, and its post-credits scene set up a major partnership between Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange and Charlize Theron's Clea, which will surely develop in Doctor Strange 3. Since Doctor Strange 3 is expected to release prior to the conclusion of Phase 6 and the MCU's potential reboot, it's possible that Multiverse of Madness' loose ends will be explained - including Strange's mysterious third eye. It's thought Doctor Strange acquired a third eye after his tampering with the Darkhold, but it's unclear exactly what this new feature means for the Master of the Mystic Arts.
6 What's Happening With The Celestial Tiamut?
Eternals not only teased Dane Whitman's future as the Black Knight, saw Celestial Arishem promise judgment on the Earth, and debuted Harry Styles as Thanos' brother Eros, but also left a much larger loose end. The bulk of Eternals featured the titular team attempting to stop the emergence of the Celestial Tiamut, and while they succeeded, the aftermath must be addressed in the MCU's future. A giant marble statue of Tiamut is now rising from the ocean, which has since only been referenced once in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. There is speculation Tiamut could be key to Captain America: Brave New World's storyline, so hopefully this will be explained soon.
5 What Does Skaar's She-Hulk Debut Mean For Bruce Banner?
Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner, a.k.a. the Hulk, has seen more character development than most since his debut in 2008's The Incredible Hulk, culminating in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law's reveal that he actually has a son, Skaar. Skaar was conceived and born during the Hulk's stay on Sakaar prior to Thor: Ragnarok (time works very differently on Sakaar), but his appearance in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law was a curious inclusion. There is speculation that Skaar's MCU debut teased Marvel Studios' potential World War Hulk adaptation, as he plays a role in the Marvel Comics' storyline, but with the status of the Hulk's film rights still unclear, Skaar's MCU future is confusing.
4 Is Mordo Still Hunting The MCU's Sorcerers?
2016's Doctor Strange set up a storyline that has since become one of the MCU's most prolonged cliffhanger endings, as Chiwetel Ejiofor's Mordo declared war on the Earth's sorcerers. Initially shown stealing Jonathan Pangborn's magic, Mordo teased the continuation of his quest in Doctor Strange's sequel, yet this never came to fruition. Ejiofor was originally planned to appear as the original Mordo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness - though the Scarlet Witch would have killed him. However, the fact this scene was cut means that Mordo could still return in the MCU's future to complete his mission, though the moment might have passed.
3 Will Hercules Seek Vengeance On Thor?
2022's Thor: Love and Thunder might have become one of the MCU's lowest-rated projects, but the Phase 4 film did introduce one of Marvel Comics' most iconic heroes to the MCU: Hercules. In Thor: Love and Thunder's mid-credits scene, a flustered Zeus orders his son, Hercules, to seek out Chris Hemsworth's Thor, and bring him to his knees. Brett Goldstein certainly looks the part, but it's unclear when Hercules will be returning to the MCU to seek out his revenge. There has been recent speculation that Marvel Studios may be producing Thor 5, which could provide a great opportunity to bring Hercules back, but this hasn't had any official confirmation.
2 What Happened During Thanos' Attack On Xandar?
After the Guardians of the Galaxy saved Xandar and the Nova Corps in their 2014 eponymous debut and stashed the Power Stone safely on the planet, Avengers: Infinity War revealed that Thanos had decimated Xandar to acquire the Infinity Stone. Reportedly, a 45-minute scene was cut from Infinity War, which showed Thanos' attack on Xandar, but this was cut from the Phase 3 epic to spare the already huge run-time. There have been calls for this scene to be released, particularly with the prospect of a Nova project in the MCU. Audiences want to know what happened on Xandar, and how this event birthed a powerful new hero.
1 Is The Scarlet Witch Actually Dead After Doctor Strange 2?
After the events of WandaVision, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness completed Wanda Maximoff's transformation into the Darkhold-corrupted Scarlet Witch. Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch and Cumberbatch's Strange battled for the fate of MCU newcomer Xochitl Gomez's America Chavez, though it was the young hero herself who eventually showed Maximoff the error of her ways. With a change of heart, the Scarlet Witch brought the eerie castle on Mount Wundagore down on top of her, seemingly sacrificing herself, though many believe she is still alive. Before
Avengers: Secret Wars reboots the MCU, Marvel Studios needs to provide a definitive answer to the Scarlet Witch's fate.
