"It Is A Kevin Feige Production": The Marvels Director Gets Honest About Marvel"s Involvement In The MCU Movie

Summary
  • The Marvels director Nia DaCosta reveals that the movie is truly a Kevin Feige production and that she knew she would have to take a back seat.
  • DaCosta's comments suggest that The Marvels may fall victim to the ongoing criticism of Marvel films feeling repetitive and their directors lacking creative control.
  • The MCU's recent negative trend, characterized by faulty CGI, uneven stories, and over-reliance on the Marvel formula, raises concerns about The Marvels' ability to break free from these issues.
The Marvels director Nia DaCosta opens up about Marvel Studios' involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. DaCosta has quite the mission in her hands, not only having to continue Carol Danvers' story after Brie Larson's Captain Marvel made over $1 billion at the box office, but The Marvels' cast also adds two MCU heroes. Iman Vellani's Ms. Marvel and Teyonah Parris' Monica Rambeau will be part of The Marvels, which promises to be a classic MCU adventure.
Speaking with Vanity Fair, DaCosta got honest about just how the MCU machine influenced The Marvels' story. According to the director, The Marvels is very much linked to Marvel Studios' president, with DaCosta saying, "It is a Kevin Feige production, it’s his movie." The director, known mostly for indie movies where she gets to have full creative freedom, revealed that she headed into The Marvels knowing that a part of her was "going to take a back seat.” Check out the full quote below:
“It is a Kevin Feige production, it’s his movie. So I think you live in that reality, but I tried to go in with the knowledge that some of you is going to take a back seat.”
The Marvels Could Suffer From A Major MCU Problem Since the end of the Infinity Saga, the MCU has been going through a rough patch in its history. While some recent Marvel movies and shows have been successful, several have received criticism due to faulty CGI, uneven stories, poor pacing, and an over-reliance on the famous Marvel formula — the latter of which connects directly to DaCosta's comments. Following The Marvels' trailer, which promised a nice dose of space fun, it seemed like the movie might be avoiding that negative trend.
However, DaCosta's words don't inspire confidence that The Marvels is going to avoid the MCU's ongoing problems. The MCU's recent negative trend started during Phase 4, which was the most criticized in Marvel Studios history by far. It has continued with Phase 5 projects like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Secret Invasion, impacting MCU movies and series.
With DaCosta detailing how The Marvels is a Feige movie at its core and that the director approached it knowing she would have to take a back seat, it is more likely than not that the Captain Marvel sequel will fall prey to the criticism that many Marvel movies feel similar. Many times over the years, Marvel has been accused of giving its directors little control, and DaCosta makes it seem like The Marvels went through the same issue. If that is the case, the recent wave of criticism over MCU projects not escaping the repetitive Marvel formula should continue with The Marvels.
