Kamala Khan actress Iman Vellani perfectly explains The Marvels’ mid-credits scene, which teases the Marvel Cinematic Universe debut of a familiar team from Marvel Comics. Vellani debuted as Kamala Khan in 2022’s Ms. Marvel, which not only set up Khan’s lead role in The Marvels, but also reimagined the character as a mutant (rather than an Inhuman), setting up the MCU’s inevitable new iteration of the X-Men. Kamala Khan’s final scene in The Marvels includes a surprise cameo from another new MCU hero, in addition to being a reference to one of the franchise’s most famous scenes.
The Marvels’ mid-credits scene sees none other than Kate Bishop, Clint Barton’s successor as Hawkeye (as established in 2021’s Hawkeye), return to her new apartment to find Kamala Khan, who offers her membership in a superhero team she is assembling. The scene is a clear homage to Nick Fury’s iconic debut in the post-credits scene of 2008’s Iron Man, but the moment may seem perhaps a bit too meta for a character like Ms. Marvel, who cannot break the fourth wall like She-Hulk or Deadpool. Luckily, Iman Vellani has the best in-universe explanation for the scene.
“She probably went up to Nick Fury at some point in between and asked about how the Avengers got together. And I love thinking that she just planned her whole speech based off of his whole speech. Broke into Kate Bishop’s apartment, sat there waiting for her for god knows how long… I just love her thought process of all of it."
Iman Vellani's Explanation Perfectly Fits Ms. Marvel's Character Like her comic counterpart, the MCU’s Kamala Khan is an avid follower of the real-life exploits (relatively speaking) of her reality’s superheroes. In the comics, Kamala writes fanfiction about members of the X-Men and The Avengers, while her MCU counterpart attended an Avengers convention, where she ultimately used her newfound powers for the first time. Iman Vellani is not unlike Kamala Khan herself in this regard, having been an avid viewer of MCU properties well before getting the role of Ms. Marvel. Vellani’s explanation shows how well she understands Kamala Khan’s personality and characterization.
How The Young Avengers Are Already Different Than The MCU's First Avengers Team The Young Avengers is a fairly recent Marvel superhero team, having debuted in 2005 and including Kate Bishop in its original roster. Over the years, the team has also included Cassie Lang, America Chavez, and Wanda Maximoff’s sons, Billy and Tommy, all of whom have already appeared in the MCU in some form. The MCU’s eventual Young Avengers will also differ from the original Avengers team in several key ways.
Obviously, the Young Avengers members will be younger than the original Avengers team (though Kate Bis is quick to point out her adulthood in The Marvels), but a more substantial difference is the fact that the team is being assembled by its own members instead of an organization like SHIELD, removing a degree of oversight that the original team had. Moreover, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has revealed that the Sokovia Accords have been repealed, removing the need for the Young Avengers members to be overseen by the United Nations. The Marvels’ mid-credits scene may reference The Avengers, but the future team will be fundamentally different.
