Wait, Is Spider-Man 2099 A Vampire In Across The Spider-Verse?

Summary
  • Miguel O'Hara's Spider-Man 2099 has a different origin story and appearance, with fangs and a vampiric look, setting him apart from other Spider-People in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
  • Spider-Man 2099 leads the Spider Society, a group tasked with protecting the multiverse, and sees Miles Morales as a cosmic mistake when he inadvertently breaks a canon event.
  • O'Hara's transformation into Spider-Man 2099 was caused by a genetic engineering machine that altered his genetic code with spider DNA, giving him spider-like abilities and a more horror-inspired design.
Miguel O'Hara's Spider-Man 2099 is very different to the other Spider-People introduced in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, raising questions about whether he may be a vampire. Separate from his role of Moon Knight in the MCU, Oscar Isaac first voiced Miguel O'Hara at the end of Sony's 2018 animated adventure Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, before being given a more pivotal role in the 2023 sequel. As the leader of the Spider Society, a group of interdimensional Spider-People tasked with protecting the stability of the multiverse, Miguel O'Hara's Spider-Man 2099 has a huge amount of power. However, he is isolated from other wall-crawlers, as he has a very different origin story.
Although Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse continued to focus on Miles Morales' journey as Brooklyn's Spider-Man, the 2023 film also introduced hundreds of new and familiar Spider-People, comprising the Spider Society. The group was brought together by Spider-Man 2099 to safeguard the multiverse in the case of the Spider-Verse's canon events being broken. When Miles inadvertently breaks a canon event in Mumbattan, he comes face-to-face with Spider-Man 2099, who unfortunately sees the young Spider-Man as a cosmic mistake. Miguel O'Hara's villainous turn is only exacerbated by Spider-Man 2099's design in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, particularly in his almost vampiric appearance that sets him apart from the more human and recognizable Spider-People.
Why Miguel Has Fangs In Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse Close Spider-Man 2099's vampiric appearance in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse connects directly to his origin story in Marvel Comics. Whereas other Spider-People gained their abilities after being bitten by a radioactive or genetically-engineered spider, this backstory was very different for Miguel O'Hara. He was originally written in Marvel Comics to be an edgier and grittier version of Spider-Man, which translated perfectly into his Across the Spider-Verse look. Spider-Man 2099's powers don't include "spider-sense" like Peter Parker or Miles Morales, but instead has enhanced senses like vision, just like a spider, which may explain his red eyes. Spider-Man 2099 is certainly not a vampire, as his fangs can simply be explained by the fact that spiders themselves have fangs.
Spider-Man 2099's Origin Explains His Horror-Inspired Look Miguel O'Hara's design as Spider-Man 2099 in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse are taken straight from the pages of Marvel Comics, and link to the Spider-Man 2099's complex origin story as the future wall-crawler. Unlike other Spider-People, who were bitten by spiders, O'Hara put himself through a genetic engineering machine at Alchemax to rid himself of an addiction to Rapture, a highly addictive drug that genetically bonds to the user. Without O'Hara's knowledge, his disgruntled employer Tyler Stone sabotages the machine, causing it to alter O'Hara's genetic code with 50% spider DNA. This gifts him spider-like abilities in a very unorthodox way.
The more natural evolution of his abilities - with his own genetic code being altered - means that Miguel O'Hara took on more characteristics reminiscent of actual spiders. This included fangs, venom, enhanced vision with red eyes, and organic webbing created within his body, which were all adapted into the hardened, villainous design for Spider-Man 2099 in cross the Spider-Verse. This more gruesome transformation led to Spider-Man 2099's animated design taking inspiration from horror elements, and helped to enhance O'Hara's role as a villain to Miles Morales in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
