Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch has worn several different superhero costumes since her official debut in the MCU in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron. Olsen made her first appearance as Wanda Maximoff in the post-credits scene of 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson as her brother, Pietro Maximoff. Since then, Wanda has become one of the MCU's most popular characters, and has seen more development than most other heroes in the franchise, taking her from minor antagonist to Avenger, and from grieving mother to corrupted villain. As well as Wanda's character seeing an evolution, her superhero costumes as the MCU's Scarlet Witch have also been through major changes.
Over the course of eight main appearances in the MCU, Elizabeth Olsen has sported seven primary costumes as the Scarlet Witch, each taking elements of inspiration from her iconic costume from Marvel Comics. This culminated in her gaining her much-anticipated final costume in her solo Disney+ series, WandaVision, finally embracing her identity as the Scarlet Witch. Even so, this took a dark turn in the MCU's Phase 4, which also seemingly resulted in the Scarlet Witch's death during Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While there is speculation that Olsen will return to the MCU, it seems it'll be a while before Wanda Maximoff's Scarlet Witch suits-up once again.
7 Wanda's Final Age Of Ultron Look Only Makes 1 MCU Appearance Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015) While she spent most of 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron in a more civilian outfit, the final moments of the Phase 2 crossover film saw Wanda Maximoff recruited into the Avengers, and get gifted an updated costume. This new look took elements from her original casual costume, notably the deep red color palette, but with a sleeker feel. However, while this perhaps should have been an upgrade, this costume was stripped of any personality. To make matters worse, this was the only time this costume was seen on screen, as Wanda gained a new costume for her next appearance in Captain America: Civil War, so this suit is easily forgotten.
6 Wanda's Casual Costume Hints To Her Troubled Sokovian Backstory Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015) Even though her final Age of Ultron look was arguably more appropriate for her new career as a superhero, Wanda Maximoff's primary costume in the 2015 film fit her personality far better. Taking inspiration from her Sokovian background, and her history as a political activist and hardened Hydra volunteer, Wanda's more civilian costume that she sports throughout Age of Ultron is made up of a simple black dress, knee-high, ripped black leggings, boots, a red jacket, and a selection of rings, necklaces, and other accessories that complete the ensemble. This all added to the mysticism surrounding the emerging Scarlet Witch, yet wasn't as refined as some of her later outfits.
5 Wanda's Civil War Look Is Her Most Consistent Costume Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019) Close After being officially recruited for the Avengers at the end of Age of Ultron, Wanda Maximoff received a new costume for Captain America: Civil War, which ended up becoming her most consistent outfit in the MCU. Whereas most heroes change their costumes with every new adventure they appear in, Wanda retained this stylish and practical red-and-black costume through Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Comprising a deep red top and trench coat, with black leggings and boots, this outfit held on to what made her previous civilian look so impactful, while modernizing it, allowing her to stand alongside some of the MCU's more colorful heroes.
The gift of this particular costume was that it was extremely functional for Wanda's activities as the Scarlet Witch. The casual feel to this outfit meant that she could move easily, which came in handy during battle against the Mad Titan Thanos, his Outrider army, and even her fellow Avengers. This costume kept the mystical themes that Wanda's original look introduced, with the retention of a necklace and black gloves adding to the empowerment of the trench coat. While this suit became Wanda's favored outfit, the traumatic events of Infinity War and Endgame saw her leave this costume behind, though it did make a reappearance in the MCU's Phase 4.
4 Scarlet Witch's Zombie Costume Puts A Terrifying Spin On Her Civil War Suit What If...? (2021) While Wanda sported her Civil War outfit briefly during 2021's WandaVision, the costume also got a terrifying update in Marvel Studios' animated series What If...?. During What If...? season 1, episode 5, "What If... Zombies?!," the Scarlet Witch was revealed to have fallen victim to the Quantum Realm virus that ravaged Earth, yet was being kept alive by her dedicated love, Vision. Wanda's suit in What If...? was almost exactly the same as her Civil War costume, yet was embellished with tears and rips, suggesting she put up a fight against a group of zombies before being transformed. This added an extra flavor to her most consistent costume.
3 Wanda's Classic Scarlet Witch Outfit Is A Beautiful Homage To Marvel Comics WandaVision (2021) Phase 4's WandaVision marked the first time Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany had starring roles in the MCU, and gifted both the chance to develop their stories more than they could in the franchise's theatrical releases. WandaVision episode 6, "All-New Halloween Spooktacular!," also provided the opportunity for Wanda, Vision, and Evan Peters' Quicksilver (Ralph Bohner under Agatha Harkness' spell) to show off costumes that paid homage to their characters in Marvel Comics. Explaining them away as Halloween costumes was the perfect way to give these heroes their comic-accurate suits, and it was delightful to see these more campy and ridiculous costumes from Marvel Comics brought to life.
2 Scarlet Witch's Dark Costume Mirrors Her Twisted Mind & Darkhold Corruption Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness (2022) After the ending of WandaVision, which saw Wanda take down the Hex around Westview, effectively killing Vision and their children, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness featured her transformation into a bona fide villain. Wanda acquired the Darkhold in WandaVision, which she used to learn how to travel the multiverse, hoping to be reunited with her kids. The Darkhold's corruption was perfectly displayed in the changes made to Wanda's costume, as black veins spread across the fabric, her arms were covered, and her fingertips had turned to black. This was a terrifying update to the Scarlet Witch's outfit, but the original version of this suit was far more powerful.
1 WandaVision's Final Scarlet Witch Costume Is The Perfect Comic Suit Upgrade WandaVision (2021) Wanda Maximoff went through most of 2021's WandaVision in era-appropriate civilian outfits, reflecting the ever-changing time periods of the sitcom-inspired world she created. However, the series finale saw Wanda go up against Agatha Harkness in a battle that culminated in her realizing her true potential and embracing her identity as the Scarlet Witch. This came with an incredible suit upgrade, with her new outfit based on that in Marvel Comics and her previous MCU looks, but modernized beautifully with structure, color, and mystery. It's a shame that this costume was transformed for Multiverse of Madness, as this was certainly the most impactful suit for the Scarlet Witch in the MCU.
