  • The Marvels introduces new characters and sets up the future of the MCU, including the return of Carol Danvers, Kamala Khan, and Monica Rambeau.

The Marvels sees the return of Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau, and there are plenty of other major spoiler returns that set up the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a major way. The Marvels is a direct sequel to Captain Marvel, and a follow-up to the Disney+ series WandaVision and Ms. Marvel. Directed by Nia DaCosta, the MCU film continues the story of Captain Marvel alongside the Kree/Skrull elements, while also paving the way for the future of the MCU as it introduces new and very familiar characters from past Marvel and superhero projects.
The Marvels, the 33rd film in the MCU, had a few reshoots and release date delays before finally arriving in theaters. The film, which received mostly positive reviews from critics, includes Kamala Khan’s family, the return of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, and the Kree’s General Dar-Benn serving as the film’s big bad. When it comes to major spoilers, Kevin Feige and co. like to keep things under wraps as much as possible. The Marvels is no exception to that policy, though the film’s trailers have already teased the new superhero suits Captain Marvel, Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau get by the film’s end. But the spoilers don’t end there.
10 Valkyrie Helps Captain Marvel & Takes Skrull Refugees To Earth After the truce is broken with Dar-Benn and she destroys the Skrulls’ new home, Captain Marvel, Kamala Khan, and Monica Rambeau rescue as many of them as they can on a ship. Captain Marvel then calls upon the help of Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder’s Valkyrie to take the Skrull refugees to Earth while she goes on to fight Dar-Benn. Tessa Thompson reprises her role as Valkyrie and there’s an assumption she and Captain Marvel have been friends for some time. Valkyrie is happy to help out the Skrulls and Carol. While it’s unclear where the Skrulls are now they are probably with the citizens of New Asgard.
9 Captain Marvel Is Married To Prince Yan Of Aladna Captain Marvel has been gone for 30 years, so it makes sense that she’s been having space adventures that the audience doesn’t yet know about. As it turns out, Captain Marvel is married to Prince Yan of Aladna (Park Seo-joon). She claims she helped the prince out with a legal matter — that legal matter was marriage. Because Captain Marvel is a princess of Aladna, she asks Prince Yan for help to distract Dar-Benn so that she, Kamala and Monica can apprehend her. While it’s unclear exactly how Captain Marvel ended up married to Prince Yan, or how long they’ve been married, they seem to have great respect for each other.
8 Dar-Benn Dies While Creating A Rift Between Realities Kree General Dar-Benn was intent on siphoning off resources from other planets to save Hala, and she took advantage of the MCU’s universal neural teleportation network to do so. But her attempts caused a rift between realities after tearing a hole in the space-time continuum that threatened more than the MCU’s primary universe. After Dar-Benn takes Ms. Marvel’s bangle, she attempts to use them both, but when the bangles interact with the rift they cause a reaction that completely disintegrates Dar-Benn, killing her. Only the pair of bangles remain thereafter.
7 Monica Rambeau Gets Stuck In Another Universe At The End Of The Marvels Close After Dar-Benn dies while creating a rift between realities, the rift begins to expand, threatening the multiverse. Monica powers up using Captain Marvel and Kamala’s abilities to reflect that back at the rift. Once on the other side, Monica makes a decision to stay behind to make sure the rift closes the space-time continuum. Monica ends up saving the world, but at the cost of the life she’s built for herself in her own universe. With Monica on the other side of the rift, there’s no way for Captain Marvel to save her, and so Monica must fend for herself while she navigates a whole new universe and its differences.
6 Ms. Marvel Gets Both Bangles And Gives One To Captain Marvel Dar-Benn forcefully takes Kamala’s bangle, but she doesn’t wear it for long before she’s ripped apart. Kamala finally gets her bangle back and is able to wear both pieces, the set and her new superhero outfit now complete. But Ms. Marvel wearing both bangles is short-lived. In The Marvels’ final scene between her and Carol Danvers, the latter is seen wearing one of Kamala’s bangles on her wrist. It’s possible Kamala may have given the bangle to Captain Marvel as a gift, but the superhero may not choose to keep it permanently. It remains unclear whether Kamala will be wearing both bangles for good in the future of the MCU.
Kamala Khan first learned about the origins of her bangle and its connection to her family history in the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel.
5 Ms. Marvel Recruits Kate Bishop For A New Superhero Team Ms. Marvel enjoyed working with Monica and Captain Marvel so much that she came up with the idea for another superhero team, this one made up of younger superhero recruits. The final scene in The Marvels sees Kamala finding Kate Bishop. Kamala tells Kate that she has been reading up on her and her abilities, and wants her to be a part of the new superhero team. Kate doesn’t respond with a yes or no, but she seems intrigued, and this suggests that she will join Kamala in her endeavors. Ms. Marvel meeting Kate Bishop teases even more recruits to come, and that Kamala will be spearheading the initiative.
4 Ms. Marvel Namedrops Scott Lang In Reference To Recruiting Cassie Lang Not only does Ms. Marvel have her eye on recruiting Kate Bishop, but in her discussion with the archer she name drops Scott Lang (aka, Ant-Man). Kamala mentions recruiting Cassie Lang by asking Kate if she knows that Ant-Man has a daughter. So, while Cassie is not in the scene with Kamala and Kate, The Marvels referencing her reveals she might be next on the list of recruits for the Young Avengers, a superhero team akin to the original Avengers. Cassie would make a fine recruit considering she went up against Kang the Conqueror and had her own adventure within the Quantum Realm.
3 Kelsey Grammer Reprises His Role As X-Men’s Beast One of the most gasp-worthy moments in The Marvels was the appearance of Kelsey Grammer as Dr. Henry “Hank” McCoy (aka, Beast) in the mid-credits scene. Grammer’s Beast was last seen in X-Men: Days of Future Past and in X-Men: The Last Stand before that. Beast appears in The Marvels as Monica Rambeau’s doctor, examining her vitals after she was found following the rift’s closing. Having such a recognizable X-Men character cameo in The Marvels’ mid-credits scene is a big clue as to the direction the MCU is taking with the multiverse. It makes it more likely the rest of the beloved mutants will show up sooner rather than later.
2 Professor Charles Xavier Is Mentioned In The Marvels’ Mid-Credits Scene An alternate version of Professor Charles Xavier appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as a member of The Illuminati, but he died shortly after his introduction. Dr. McCoy, however, mentions Professor X in The Marvels’ mid-credits scene, indicating the X-Men leader is alive and well in this universe. Though Patrick Stewart doesn’t reprise his role in the MCU film, the fact he is mentioned at all suggests this is a wholly different universe than the one from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and that the X-Men will play a bigger role in the future.
1 Maria Rambeau Is Revealed As The Multiverse Superhero Binary When Monica wakes up in a new universe, her mother, Maria Rambeau, is by her side. But it’s actually a doppelgänger of Monica’s beloved mother. This version of Maria Rambeau knows Beast and presumably works alongside the X-Men. Specifically, Maria is the multiverse superhero Binary. In the comics, Binary is Carol Danvers, a superhero who can harness energy and space, and works alongside the X-Men. In The Marvels, it seems Maria has taken over the role of Binary in another universe, and it explains her ties with the X-Men. Though Binary’s name is never mentioned, Maria’s superhero suit alludes to the moniker and its comics history.
