How Superman Can Return From The Dead

Superman & Lois season 4 opens with the death of the iconic DC hero - but the show has already begun to look at how the Man of Steel can come back from his demise. While there have been a range of live-action Superman shows in the character"s history, the number that have adapted DC"s The Death Of Superman comic storyline is far smaller, despite the story being a considerably prominent one ever since the story"s release between 1992-1993. As such, the decision to end Superman & Lois with the iconic tale of Clark Kent"s death and revival is all the more noteworthy.
However, the show does also change core elements of The Death Of Superman narrative, which has naturally raised questions about whether the hero will actually return at all - and if so, how this would be possible. Mercifully, Superman & Lois season 4, episode 3 has provided the first glimpses of how this looks set to happen for the show, though with so many major twists and turns having happened in the story already, there"s a lot of room for the final episodes of the series to bring in more surprises.
Superman & Lois Killed Off Superman & His Best Chance At Revival (But Created A New Way) Superman & Lois Season 4 Has Already Provided Multiple Twists For The Man Of Steel's Story Close Superman & Lois season 4 killed off the Man of Steel in dramatic fashion within its first episode, which followed up on the Superman & Lois season 3 ending and its cliffhanger conclusion that left the battle between Doomsday and Superman undecided. Season 4 reveals that, although the pair do some considerable damage to one another, Doomsday ultimately wins the fight, and drags the body of Clark Kent back to Earth.
But the villain doesn"t stop there, as he proceeds to follow up on Lex Luthor"s final order to him in season 3 and remove Superman"s heart from his body, taking the organ back to Luthor. While it appears Lex has plans for Superman"s heart - as he commissions a mysterious device to keep it in, and The Death of Superman comic sees Project Cadmus attempt to clone the hero, opening possibilities for the show to adapt this plot point - these plans are seemingly quite literally crushed in episode 2 when he stomps on the heart in front of Jordan Kent to punish him for breaking into Luthor"s base.
Though there is always the chance this was a fake heart, the direction Superman & Lois has now gone in - with General Lane sacrificing himself in order to donate his heart to Superman after injecting himself with Clark"s blood - strongly suggests the real heart won"t be returning. That said, this altered human heart offers a solid chance to bring Superman back, even though it may well also change his physiological makeup if it works, since Kryptonian hearts are notably different.
Superman & Lois' DC Hero Revival Story Changes The Death Of Superman Comic In Big Ways Superman & Lois Makes Some Key Changes To Core Parts Of The Original Comic Story As the original The Death Of Superman contains a host of DC comic characters that Superman & Lois currently seems unlikely to feature - including Supergirl and Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner - it"s perhaps only natural that the series has made considerable changes to the overall narrative. Superman & Lois has Doomsday survive the fight between him and Superman, and creates the missing heart storyline as its own spin on the story, adding a totally different dimension to this part of the series.
These decisions appear to ensure Doomsday and Lex Luthor can be the primary antagonists of Superman & Lois season 4, since The Death Of Superman"s overarching story concludes with the heroes facing off against Mongul and Cyborg Superman - which would involve introducing two villains that ideally need considerable backstories alongside all the other moving parts of the show"s final season. Instead, having the series center on Superman coming back from the dead and defeating the character who killed him and his arch-nemesis looks set to provide a more cathartic conclusion to the story.
Superman & Lois' Comic Similarities Tease Other Ways He Could Return From The Dead Superman & Lois Has Some Parallels To The Comics That Suggest Other Possibilities For The DC Show Close While there are key differences between DC"s original The Death Of Superman story and Superman & Lois" adaptation of the arc, it"s also worth noting that there are similarities as well, and these shared elements raise interesting possibilities for where the show is heading next. Firstly, Sam Lane"s death being used to help bring back Superman can be seen as a reflection of the comics, wherein Jonathan Kent has a heart attack and then sees his son while in a coma, encouraging him to return to the land of the living, supporting the show"s current focal story.
However, in the comics, several Superman replacements emerge - including Superboy, Cyborg Superman, Steel, and the Eradicator - with Cyborg Superman and the Eradicator (in the guise of Superman) both being confused for the real Man of Steel throughout the story. In the end, though, it"s revealed the Eradicator has simply stored Superman in a Kryptonian regeneration matrix, and has siphoned off his energy to take his place.
As such, it"s notable that Superman & Lois already has its own version of Superboy and Steel, that Superman is also in a version of this regeneration matrix in the show as well, and that season 4 conveniently introduced a hologram version of Superman that he supposedly created in case of his passing without ever telling any of his family. With this in mind, it seems quite possible that this hologram may end up becoming the show"s version of the Eradicator or Cyborg Superman, whose defeat could thus be the final thing that"s needed for Clark to come back.
Similarly, in the comics, Superman finds himself finally restored to both life and consciousness after the regeneration pod he"s stored in is overloaded with energy. This raises the possibility that what may be needed for Superman & Lois to finally and officially return Clark Kent to the land of the living is a similar charge. Adapting this aspect of the story would make sense for the show, since it could be an effective way to give purpose to Jonathan"s new powers, or have the other heroes band together to finally bring back the beloved hero.
