The One Villain The Batman 2’s Director Has Confirmed The Movie Won’t Use Would Have Been Perfect For The DC Sequel

Details surrounding The Batman Part II have finally begun to trickle out, and a perfect villain for the DC Universe movie has been confirmed to not appear in it. While the film's main villain has not yet been revealed, comments about the upcoming DC release have written off some antagonists. Following the first film's incredible realization of Gotham, the potential of seeing every iconic Batman villain from the comics realized in this context is promising, and audiences have been hoping to see their favorites.
Excitement for The Batman - Part II's story is high, even with the launch of the new DC Universe impending. With James Gunn and Peter Safran rebooting the overall franchise, there has been some previous concern that sequels to The Batman may not actually happen. However, with pre-production finally occurring and the release of The Penguin coming soon on HBO, it appears that this world of The Batman will indeed expand, even if some figures won't be appearing in said expansion.
Why The Batman 2 Doesn't Include Gentleman Ghost James Craddock Has Been In DC Comics For Many Years Gentleman Ghost, a DC comics villain who premiered in 1947, has been confirmed not to appear in The Batman Part II. The spectral figure premiered in the comics as a Hawkman and Hawkgirl villain before going on to face Batman. He recently appeared in the rule-breaking animated series Batman: Caped Crusader, and viewers may have been wondering if they might see more of James Craddock in other upcoming DC releases. As it stands, The Batman creator Matt Reeves has established that the villain contrasts with his vision for the franchise.
Speaking to ComicBookMovie.com, Matt Reeves discussed the grounded nature of The Batman's universe. While there is a level of fantastical that makes sense in the universe, the filmmaker does not want to move all the way into fantasy. Reeves stated "Gentleman Ghost is probably pushed a bit too far for us to be able to find a way to do," before acknowledging the importance of leaning close to the fantastical elements. With the sequel script being well into development, it's clear other figures were selected for its story, and that the antagonist is unlikely to appear in any future movies.
The Batman 2 Could Have Been The Perfect Place For Gentleman Ghost An Interpretation Of The Villain Could Have Worked Great In Reeves' Epic Crime Saga Close Unfortunately, Matt Reeves' comments are also an excellent case for why someone like Gentleman Ghost would be an excellent villain for the upcoming sequel. While the filmmaker did note the importance of reality, he also said to ComicBookMovie.com that "there is a fun way to think about how we would take characters that might push over into a bit of the fantastical and find a way to make sense of that.” Using Gentleman Ghost in this way would fit in with the tone of the universe and the feel of the film’s October release.
Certainly, a flying, transparent ghost figure of the undead would not fit in the sequel. However, an iteration of Craddock tied in with the wealthy crime families of Gotham who uses these themes and images to stir up fear in Gotham would be extremely interesting. While a direct iteration of the villain would not work, there is much about the character's theme and style that would fit in perfectly with the grounded, gritty version of Gotham seen in the upcoming film.
Despite this, Gentleman Ghost will not appear in The Batman Part II, despite this prospective potential. Still, this allows speculation to run wild about what villains the upcoming film will eventually use. Batman's rogues gallery is enormous, with several iconic foes that would be perfect fits for the universe. Whether the movie uses popular villains like Mr. Freeze or focuses on lesser-known foes like The Court of Owls, The Batman Part II will surely be an excellent addition to the DC Universe when it is released in October 2026.
