Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse Credits Tease Explained & Beyond The Spider-Verse Setup

Quick Links Why Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Doesn't Have A Post-Credits Scene Mid-Credits Tease: Miles Morales Will Return In Beyond the Spider-Verse Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.Sony Pictures Animation's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has a post-credits tease setting up the third movie in the series, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. In 2018, Sony launched both the live-action and animated sides of their Marvel universe, a franchise that has included some crossover with Marvel Studios' Marvel Cinematic Universe. But, while those connections exist, the Spider-Verse movies have largely focused on telling the story of Miles Morales.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse included a post-credits scene introducing Miguel O'Hara aka Spider-Man 2099, who becomes an important character in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse as the leader of the Spider-Society. The scene also showcased Spider-Man 2099 traveling to other universes, setting the stage for a new multiverse story in the sequel. Now, we break down the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse credits tease and what it means for the third Spider-Verse movie.
Why Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Doesn't Have A Post-Credits Scene Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse does not include a post-credits scene, but it does have a text card at the mid-credits point. The text card acts as setup for the third movie in the series, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, and confirms Miles Morales' story continues after Across the Spider-Verse. Though it's not a full post-credits scene, there is some sequel setup during the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse credits.
So why does Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse have no post-credits scene? The usual trend in Marvel's superhero movies is to include a look ahead to what's next, but Across The Spider-Verse's cliffhanger ending is more in line with Avengers: Infinity War, which similarly avoided showing anything from Endgame. Unlike Infinity War, Across the Spider-Verse chose to avoid a coda to preserve the shock of the reveal of the alternate universe Miles Morales. They could arguably have had another look at Spot in his new villainous form, but the villain's story works better if it's unclear where he is after threatening to kill Miles' family.
Is The Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Credits Tease Worth Waiting For? While the credits are always worth watching to get an idea of everyone involved in the production of a film, including the animators who brought the movie to life, it's worth noting the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse credits tease is important for those who may not know Beyond the Spider-Verse is already in development. The tease offers confirmation of the story continuing. So, although Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse doesn't have a credits scene, it does set up Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Mid-Credits Tease: Miles Morales Will Return In Beyond the Spider-Verse At the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse mid-credits point, there is a text card that reads "Miles Morales will return in" before cutting to the logo for the upcoming Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse sequel. This mimics the approach of the MCU, which, in Phase 1 and more recently in Phases 4 and 5, features text at the very end of their movies reading, "[Character] will return." However, while Marvel Studios typically uses white text on a black screen - with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 being the rare exception - the Across the Spider-Verse credits tease is more artistic, reflecting the movie's brightly colored animation.
When Does Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Come Out? Following Across the Spider-Verse, the Beyond the Spider-Verse release date was initially set for March 29, 2024, but was then removed from the release schedule entirely with the announcement of the SAG Afra strike that brought Hollywood to a stand-still. Beyond the Spider-Verse's release delay also followed a damning report from insiders working on Across the Spider-Verse who revealed an unsustainable culture of over-working and multiple artists leaving over the conditions. That report suggested there was no way Beyond the Spider-Verse would ever meet its projected release date, given the required workload to get it completed. It's telling that the delay came with no release date, which may suggest Beyond the Spider-Verse will release far later than expected, perhaps even in 2025.
How Across the Spider-Verse Sets Up Beyond the Spider-Verse The Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ending cliffhanger paves the way for Beyond the Spider-Verse to pick up where it left off. That means Miles will still be on Earth-42, where he was captured by an alternate universe version of his uncle Aaron Davis. He'll also face off with the alternate version of himself, who is The Prowler in that universe. The end of the movie teased Miles might be able to use his electric powers to escape the bindings holding him to Aaron's punching bag, but whether he does so is left to be revealed in Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Elsewhere in the multiverse, Gwen Stacy decides to forsake the Spider-Society and help Miles. Spider-Man 2099 and the rest of the Spider-Society were trying to track down Miles and stop him from saving his father from being killed, as Jefferson dying would be a canon event that needs to occur to preserve Miles' universe. However, while the Spider-Society were waiting for Miles in his home universe on Earth-1610, he ended up on Earth-42 because that's where the spider that bit him originated. Unfortunately, no one knows where he is, so while he's escaped the Spider-Society, it also means Gwen doesn't know where he is either.
To help her find Miles, Gwen assembles her own team of Spider-people, including Peter B. Parker, Spider-Punk, Pavitr Prabhakar, Spider-Byte, Peni Parker, Spider-Man Noir and Spider-Ham. Spider-Man Noir and Spider-Ham don't have speaking lines in Across the Spider-Verse, and Peni Parker only had a short cameo, but it appears the original Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse characters will be returning for Beyond the Spider-Verse. Gwen's team assembles her and Miles' allies from the first two movies to help her find and save Miles.
Once Gwen and Miles are reunited, they'll have to first battle The Prowler on Earth-42, forcing Miles to fight himself, and then their team will go head-to-head with Spider-Man 2099 and the rest of the Spider-Society. Miles Morales has proven himself a capable Spider-Man, but in Beyond the Spider-Verse he'll have to fight to save his father and keep his family intact. So, while there wasn't a whole scene, the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse credits tease did set the stage for the third movie in the series.
