A decade after the premiere of Agents of SHIELD, Marvel Studios’ thoughts on the spin-off have finally been revealed. The show is notably the MCU’s first-ever television series, paving the way for future Netflix and Disney+ series. Following The Avengers character Phil Coulson and the life of other agents from the organization SHIELD, the show successfully garnered acclaim and a following that the recent MCU shows have struggled to replicate.
Besides following a traditional television format of a pilot and multiple seasons, there wasn’t much of a blueprint as to how Marvel Studios wanted Agents of SHIELD to go. As it was the studio’s first venture into TV, show creators Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen had the freedom to take some creative liberties. However, it was the creation of the show at all that was what sparked some debate among Marvel Studios, even influencing the Disney+ shows a decade later.

In the book MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios by Dave Gonzales and Joanna Robinson, Avengers director Joss Whedon revealed Marvel Studios’ real thoughts on Agents of SHIELD. After writing the pilot with his brother and sister-in-law, the three went ahead with filming, and ABC ordered the series in 2013. Despite the positive response, Whedon revealed that “Marvel didn’t actually want me to make [the show].” After Whedon’s success with The Avengers, Marvel wanted him to focus more on the sequel Age of Ultron instead. Agents of SHIELD was left in the hands of Jed and Tanchareon, who led the show to a seven-season run.
