The MCU Wasted The Perfect Character For Their New Super Team 8 Years Ago

Summary
  • Crossbones fits the grounded paramilitary feel of the Thunderbolts team in the MCU.
  • Crossbones would give the Thunderbolts an actual villain among redeemed characters.
  • Frank Grillo's tenure as Crossbones was cut short in the MCU, but there's a chance he could return in the multiverse.
Among the new teams that will be introduced in the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 5 is the Thunderbolts, and sadly, the MCU wasted the perfect character for this team eight years ago. The Multiverse Saga has seen various changes in the MCU’s teams and alliances, with some teams going on their final adventures (as is the case for the Guardians of the Galaxy), new teams being introduced (like the Eternals), and characters from past movies joining forces to form a unique group, as is about to happen in Thunderbolts.
The Thunderbolts’ arrival at the MCU has been in development since June 2022, and in September of that same year, the official line-up and main cast were announced: Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss). Of course, more characters are expected to be announced as part of Thunderbolts, and there’s one who would have been perfect for it, but Marvel wasted him back in Phase 3.

Brock Rumlow Fits The Grounded Paramilitary Feel Of The MCU Thunderbolts Crossbones would be the perfect addition to Thunderbolts Close In Marvel Comics, the Thunderbolts are an antihero team formed mostly by reformed supervillains. Thunderbolts was created by Kurt Busiek and Mark Bagley and the team made its first appearance in The Incredible Hulk (vol. 2) #449, in 1997. The Thunderbolts team has gone through different versions since its debut, and various Marvel characters have been part of it at some point, such as Baron Zemo, Hawkeye, Green Goblin, Luke Cage, and even Ant-Man. The team known as “Thunderbolts V” counted on the skills of Brock Rumlow a.k.a. Crossbones, a mercenary often employed by villains, and who made his MCU debut in Phase 2.
Rumlow made his first MCU appearance in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and he was played by Frank Grillo. Rumlow turned out to be a HYDRA infiltrator who had been posing as a SHIELD agent and STRIKE’s field commander. Rumlow’s training under both HYDRA and SHIELD turned him into an expert in street fighting, martial arts, and military combat techniques, and he was also an expert spy, tactician, and master marksman. Rumlow’s background and experience make him a perfect fit for Thunderbolts as the movie has a grounded paramilitary feel, and he’s not a character with superpowers.
The members of the Thunderbolts don’t have superpowers.
The members of the Thunderbolts don’t have superpowers, with some being the result of the Super Soldier Serum, which doesn’t imbue its subjects with superpowers, instead enhancing various aspects to make them a peak human. The only character with superpowers is Ghost, so it’s not a requirement to have superpowers to join the Thunderbolts, so Crossbones definitely fits the team.
Crossbones Would Give The Thunderbolts Team An Actual Villain Crossbones would be the actual villain among redeemed ones. Close As mentioned above, the Thunderbolts team is formed by redeemed villains, though in the case of the MCU’s version, some of them weren’t villains to begin with. Bucky Barnes was brainwashed and manipulated by HYDRA for decades, Yelena Belova wasn’t a villain but her motives were questionable at one point, and Red Guardian wasn’t a villain, either. John Walker/U.S. Agent became a villain in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier after taking a version of the Super Soldier Serum, but by the end of the series, he ended up saving hostages and assisting Bucky in capturing the Flag Smashers.
Ghost was the villain in Ant-Man and the Wasp, but at the end of it, she was no longer one after explaining why she had been doing what she did. Taskmaster also served as an antagonist, though the real villain was her father, Dreykov, who had brainwashed her to do what he ordered her to. At the end of Black Widow, Taskmaster was given an antidote to break her free, and it’s unknown where she has been since then.
Crossbones, on the other hand, never redeemed himself nor did he show any remorse for everything he did. During the battle at the Triskelion in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, a Helicarrier crashed into the Triskellion, crushing Rumlow. However, Rumlow survived, though he was badly wounded and was left immune to pain. Rumlow blamed Captain America for what happened to him and continued to go after him in Captain America: Civil War. Adding Crossbones to the Thunderbolts team, whatever his intentions could be, would have made the team more legitimately morally gray as he would have been the only true villain.
Crossbones Actor Frank Grillo Agrees Rumlow's MCU Tenure Was Too Short Crossbones was killed off too quickly after his MCU debut. After his brief appearance in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Crossbones had an even briefer appearance in Captain America: Civil War. Crossbones appeared at the beginning, during the Lagos catastrophe, and he died when he activated the explosives in his suit, as he planned to activate them to take Captain America’s life along with his own, but Wanda Maximoff contained the explosion and Crossbones died. Frank Grillo has agreed that Crossbones’ time in the MCU was too short, saying that he “was a little pissed off” about how quickly his story came to an end, but his contract with Marvel covered seven movies.
Frank Grillo’s Crossbones could return at some point as part of the multiverse, as there are still versions of the character across the multiverse who haven’t died and who have gone through completely different experiences. Crossbones would be a perfect addition to the Thunderbolts team, but it’s highly unlikely he will be brought back in the main MCU timeline.
Thunderbolts (2025) Marvel's Thunderbolts is a superhero movie based on the comic team of the same name. The movie acts as a part of the MCU's fifth phase of films. The film sees the likes of Bucky Barnes, Yelena Belova, Wyatt Russell, the Red Guardian, and more as an unlikely group of heroes and villains brought together to fight for good.
