James Mangold’s Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi movie can finally show audiences the origin of the first lightsaber. Dawn of the Jedi will be a Star Wars movie like no other – instead of focusing on the Skywalker family, the Jedi Order’s heyday, or the rise and fall of the Empire and its offshoots, Dawn of the Jedi will explore a previously uncharted period of the Star Wars timeline. More specifically, it will take place 25,000 years before the Skywalker saga.
Dawn of the Jedi has the power to change the audience’s understanding of the Star Wars franchise forever. Lightsabers, for instance, have been an integral part of Star Wars lore since the very first Star Wars movie, and yet their true origin has never fully been unveiled, not even in the array of canon comic books, novels, and games that make up a vast swathe of the franchise’s storytelling. While it’s been revealed why the Jedi use lightsabers, how younglings construct them for the first time, and why they are connected to the Force, little else is known of how they came to be. Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi movie has the perfect opportunity to change that.
James Mangold's Star Wars Is About What Came Before The Jedi James Mangold has hinted that his Star Wars movie is about what came before the Jedi religion – how the Force was first discovered and by whom. It stands to reason that the Force existed before the Jedi Order, as the Jedi’s entire belief system is predicated on the existence of the Force and their being able to access it. If Dawn of the Jedi is in fact about whoever, or whatever, preceded the Jedi Order, then it will likely show the seeds of the Jedi Order being planted, including their beliefs, values, and, of course, their fighting styles and choice of weaponry.
