Hulk"s Secret Superpower Will Make Him A Nightmare For The MCU"s X-Men

Summary
  • The Hulk's power of telepathic resistance poses a major challenge for telepathic mutants like Professor X and Jean Grey when they potentially face him in the MCU.
  • The Hulk's mind becomes pure rage when he transforms, making him nearly impossible to control or predict, making it difficult for characters with telepathic powers to calm him down or give him telepathic commands.
  • The Hulk's power of telepathic resistance is significant because it limits the options to stop him when he's out of control, posing a dangerous proposition for heroes who lack his super-strength or durability.
The Hulk has one hidden superpower that will make him a real challenge for the X-Men once they debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Hulk and the X-Men have both been central figures of the modern superhero movie age, but their paths have been very different with the Hulk joining the MCU in The Incredible Hulk while the X-Men remained in their own universe in the Fox X-Men films. Deadpool 3 is finally changing that with Hugh Jackman's Wolverine donning his comic-accurate costume and entering the MCU through the doorways of the multiverse, while plans are currently underway to properly introduce the X-Men into the franchise.
The X-Men include some of the most powerful characters in Marvel Comics, such as Wolverine, Storm, Professor X, and Jean Grey. The Hulk's anger-fueled strength and volatile nature make him a potential wildcard that other Marvel heroes must be prepared to potentially subdue, and the X-Men could face that once they meet the Hulk after their MCU debut. However, the Hulk's mind is actually one of his greatest strengths in one specific way, and it could make him much more challenging in a possible showdown with the X-Men.

Hulk Has Telepathic Resistance, But It Hasn't Been Shown In The MCU While the MCU has included many of the Hulk's powers, one the franchise has yet to show is his power of telepathic resistance. In essence, whenever Bruce Banner is transformed into the Hulk (most typically the Savage Hulk), his mind is in a haze of pure rage, which makes him impossible to predict or control. This also means that characters with telepathic powers face a nearly impossible task in probing the Hulk's mind to get him to calm down or submit to telepathic commands, a major challenge for telepaths like Professor X and Jean Grey.
While the Hulk was sent on a violent rampage after Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) performs some mind manipulation on Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Bruce was still in human form when she did so, with her spell bringing out the Hulk in his most violent, uncontrollable state. An already transformed Hulk would have been a far greater challenge for even a sorceress like Wanda Maximoff, which shows how much of an uphill battle telepathic mutants on the X-Men will encounter with the Hulk's mind.
Why Hulk's Hidden Power Is Such A Big Deal To The X-Men The Hulk's power of telepathic resistance is a particularly big problem for other heroes because there are so few options available to stop the Hulk when he's out of control. Few of the Hulk's fellow Marvel heroes have super-strength or durability on the level that he does, which makes fighting him hand-to-hand an extremely dangerous proposition. Professor X, Jean Grey, or Emma Frost would probably enter a confrontation with the Hulk, thinking they can shut down his mind, only to be in for a very rude awakening when they realize he can fight off their telepathy.
If the Hulk reverts from Smart Hulk to Angry Hulk before the X-Men join the MCU, the heroic team of mutants could find themselves in exactly the same situation the Avengers did in The Avengers and Age of Ultron in having to find a way to stop him. That would surely be an intriguing and fun parallel to create, and one in which Wolverine might be the only member of the X-Men durable enough able to face down the Hulk in a fight. That could set up quite the memorable introduction for the X-Men's entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
