The Marvels is already breaking one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s biggest flaws since Avengers: Endgame, which is great news for future MCU movies. The MCU’s Multiverse Saga is not only exploring the multiverse and its many dangers, but it’s also continuing the stories of characters who have been left aside for too long. Such is the case of Carol Danvers a.k.a. Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), who since her debut solo movie in 2019 has only briefly appeared in other MCU movies, most notably Avengers: Endgame, as she fought in the Battle of Earth.
Carol Danvers is finally making a proper return in The Marvels, where she will join forces with two other female heroes: Kamala Khan a.k.a. Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). The Marvels will see these three characters swapping places every time they use their powers, while they also do their best to stop Kree warrior Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton). Of course, The Marvels will be packed with action, which was concerning given the quality of the MCU’s visual effects since Avengers: Endgame, but Captain Marvel’s new adventure seems to be breaking this bad trend.
The Marvels Is Breaking An MCU CGI Trend A big part of the success of the MCU is due to its visual effects, as all its action scenes and many of its characters wouldn’t have been possible without the current technology. However, this is one of the most inconsistent aspects of the MCU, and the quality of its visual effects has massively decreased since Avengers: Endgame, in part due to visual effects artists not being given enough time to do their magic. This has led to a lot of complaints and criticism about the use of CGI in the MCU, with many scenes being quite evident that they were shot in front of green screens, with fully CGI sets, and poorly used LED walls, such as the explosion scene with Natasha and Yelena in Black Widow and the Omnipotence City scenes in Thor: Love & Thunder.
Although The Marvels is not out yet and the trailers have only shown brief moments of action, a behind-the-scenes featurette shows Marvel has finally learned its lesson on the use of CGI. In preparation for the release of The Marvels, Marvel dropped a featurette that begins with an impressive look at how one of the movie's many action scenes was filmed. In it, actors and stunt doubles are seen performing the fights, and the camera people are also flying around, following them to catch the shots. In addition to that, the whole set is a real, physical one, instead of being a CGI creation. This ensures more authenticity and will be visually refreshing for the audience after years of very obviously bad CGI.
Why The MCU Needs To Re-Embrace Practical Sets The MCU needs to cut down on its CGI use and go back to practical sets for the sake of the visual quality of its movies. Surely, there are settings, like those in space, that would require some CGI additions, but a mix of practical sets and CGI has already proven to be effective in past movies. It’s also a lot easier for actors to see themselves in the setting of each scene if it's physically there rather than having to imagine all in front of a green screen, which also helps bring realism and authenticity to their performances. The Marvels can be Marvel’s first step back into practical sets and less CGI in its action scenes, showing that the studio can learn from its mistakes and improve its quality after years of poorly done and laughable CGI scenes.
